At times throughout the year, some posters start threads to pose a trade idea. If lots of people post trade ideas, it clutters up the forum, so we decided in 2006 to try to have one thread for "random trade ideas" that are not based on news involving the Rockets. They are simply, "What do you think about... " scenarios.

Here are the rules of the "Random Trade Idea" thread.

1) Keep your trade ideas realistic. We all know why the Rockets would want a superstar ... but try to ask the question "Why does it make sense for the other team?"

2) Don't be a jerk. There are going to be unrealistic scenarios posted ... just point out to them why it couldn't happen, if you feel so inclined. Report the post as ludicrous if you must, but don't nuke the poster and call them names. It spirals the thread down.

Thanks Fawkward, and since you posted it here I will respond to it again. This is the kind of move I think we should look at. This gives us a strong second unit, and if DMo and Jones comes around we are set. Shooters with D, now we wouldn't have to worry about defense cause we would always have a rim protector in and pretty good wing defenders to help Harden and Brooks.

D12/Asik/Smith
Jones/Dmo
Parsons/Garcia/Casspi
Harden/Afflalo/Williams
Bev/Brooks/Canaan

I don't bother tinkering with trades until December 15th. Then it's game on.

Jeremy Lin to the Suns for Goran Dragic. Makes sense for us because we get an all around better point guard. Makes sense for the Suns because while the team sucks and tries to rebuild it has a player to sell tickets solely based of his name.

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=m5qrtcf

Celtics IN: Omer Asik, D-Mo, R. Stuckey
Pelicans IN: Greg Monroe & J. Jerebko
Pistons IN:Jeremy Lin, Gerald Wallace, & Ryan Anderson
Rockets IN: Jeff Green, Jordan Crawford, C. Villaneuva

Why Boston does it?
They get a top 10 center on a good contract while getting rid of the Gerald Wallace contract. They are rebuilding, so getting rid of the Wallace contract is big for them. They have M. Brooks to replace J. Crawford. They also get an expiring contract in R. Stuckey. Maybe they should get more for Jeff Green? But getting the Wallace contract off the books is huge.

Why Pelicans do it?
They need a center with some size. Davis has been showing some range during the USA games. A starting lineup of Monroe, Davis, Evans, Gordon, and Holiday. A young core that can grow together.

Why Pistons do it?
With the emergence of Drummond, they need to trade Monroe. They need a point guard. They get a sharp shooter in Anderson, because they are taking on the Gerald Wallace contract. A front court of Drummond, Anderson, and Smith is nice.

Why Rockets do it?
They get a stretch 4 in Jeff Green, who will complement Dwight Howard. A nice young guard in Jordan Crawford and a expiring contract in Charlie Villanueva. This also clears cap space next year to sign Parsons to an extension. (Lin is off the books next year, Green Replaces Asik's contract, and Villanueva and Crawford and both expiring).

Asik, Parsons, Jones, Lin to Minnesota
Love, Shved to Houston
:D

I think we might be targeting Love since we chose not to acquire Smith and we obviously value 3pt shooting at the 4 spot. I doubt Minny trades Love this year but Love can opt out in the 2014-15 season and we may see a trade like this made then.

Trade #1 is the most obvious trade, given the seemingly imminent Marcus Camby signing:

Greg Smith for a high (31-40 overall) second round pick. The logic: third string Cs rarely play; Camby is a solid backup #2 C) if Dwight Howard or Omer Asik are unavailable for any reason; Smith becomes a free agent next summer, and somebody will give him a fair amountof money, and that somebody will not be Houston. So you want to get something of value for him. Also, you need to make a) player-for draft pick deals and/or b) quantity-for-quality deals due to the crowded roster.

Trade #2 isn't as obvious:

Donatas Motiejunas for a non-lottery (15-30) first round pick. The logic: Terrence Jones is the better player; the team doesn't need a "backup PF" because they clearly intend to employ small all lineups (with Chandler Parsons at the 4 spot) and twin towers lineups (with Omer Asik at the 4) when Terrence Jones is on the bench; Motiejunas' value decreases going forward if/when he is riding the pine. Trade high, especially since he's a non-rotation player.

The Rockets may be done after these two deals, but if Daryl Morey is feeling ambitious, he can exploit the desperate, badly managed Bucks organization (who badly want/need a PG and who has reached an impasse in negotiations with Brandon Jennings) by making the following trade:

Jeremy Lin for a first round pick. The logic: Lin is okay, but two years, #20 mil (what he's owed over the next two seasons) is too much money for a player who is just okay; the pick likely winds up in the mid-teens (12-16 overall), and Morey can find a very good rotation player in this range, who will obviously be younger, cheaper, and under team/cost control for four years; the team is probably not going to miss Lin, as they can roll with a PG by committee (Patrick Beverly, Aaron Brooks, maybe some Isaiah Canaan sooner than you think) until a better option emerges.

And if/when a better option emerges, Houston will have cap space to work with (created by trading Lin), plus some draft picks. Here are a few PGs who may become available if/when their teams flop in 2013-14:

Ty Lawson
Jrue Holiday
Rajon Rondo
Goran Dragic
Kemba Walker
Jeff Teague
Steve Nash

If Nash bounces back and the Lakers are awful (and I think they finish anywhere from 12th to 15th in the West), then a Nash salary dump gives them all of the cap space in the world in 2014. If Nash can be productive/injury-free, then a Nash-Beverly PG rotation (24 minutes/game each) would be fantastic.

Just for fun (plus this scenario is not outlandish), here's your roster after making the above three deals for draft picks involving Smith, Motiejunas, and Lin, and later trading, say, your late 2014 first round pick (likely 26-30 overall) and Aaron Brooks for Steve Nash.

Starting lineup

PG Steve Nash
SG James Harden
SF Chandler Parsons
C Dwight Howard

The rest of the rotation

Omer Asik
Patrick Beverly
Francisco Garcia
Reggie Williams

End of the bench

Marcus Camby
Omri Casspi
Isaiah Canaan

Developmental League

Robert Covington
Jordan Henriquez
B.J. Young

Looks like a legit title contender to me, and you pick up a good Bucks first rounder, a high second rounder, and replace the first rounder traded for Nash with the one acquired for Motiejunas.

Obviously Terrence Jones would be the starting PF. Typing/scrolling/editing on my cellphone is a challenge!

Asik+top 15 protected 2014 1st rnd pick for Ilyasova+2 second rounders.

I know "Why would we give up Asik and a first rounder?!?!?"
Well because I believe that the Bucks really value Ilyasova and probably would not take any less.

Also as has been stated on this board before I believe Ilyasova is the perfect stretch 4 on this team. I think he is a reliable 3rd option on our team and his 3pt shooting speaks for itself.

Now that PHX has the Lottery Protected 2014 1st round pick from Pacers...

They have been looking to move Gortat.

Rockets IN: Gortat, 2014 1st round (lottery protected) Pick from Suns (via Pacers)

Suns IN: Asik, D-Mo, 2 second round picks from Houston (via Blazers)

All of you LOH, sorry to inform you but he will probably be here until the end of his current contract at the very least! With improved 3pt shooting this year, expect him to sign beyond that as well.

Bev is not ready to start and there is not a better PG that we can get in a trade to replace Lin in the starting lineup. So while he is not Westbrook, Parker, CP3 or many other PGs that we would all love to have, he is the best that we are going to get at the position with our current team and plans going forward.

Any trade will be to upgrade the PF position by using Asik and lesser pieces. We won't give up Asik and Lin just to get a better PF because it weakens our starting lineup plus bench more than it strengthens us.

Sorry LOHs and ABJs. But that's just how it is. Now go ahead on and continue your dream trades though. That's what this thread is here for.
