I don't get it. I am looking for a used kayak for my gf. I found a new pelican castaway fishing kayak for $299 at academy, and some guy is selling his used castaway on craiglist for $375. I was hoping to take it off his hands for $250, willing to go to $275, but he won't budge. Yeah dude, I get it that you bought it new for $400, but one, it's used, and two, retail value is down.

I know it's his choice to sell or keep, but is it wrong of me to make an offer based on current retail price minus used condition?

Because there are people that don't know what retail is for things. They'll find something they want on ebay or craiglist, think the price seems right and just pay for it. People assume it's cheaper than retail.

    Get off my lawn!

There's actually an explanation in this Ronnie James Dio (RIP) song named "Mystery":

    Can you hear me
    Can you see
There's a storm on the edge of the sky
    Does it matter
It does to me, I can tell you why

When there's thunder, there should be rain
But it don't always follow the rule
And is the wise man always right? No he can play the fool

It's always a Mystery, not what it seems to be
It's always a Mystery, just like you and me

    We are lightning
    We are flame
And we burn at the touch of a spark
If there's fire, but no one sees
    The there's only the dark

    Just imagine, will you try
I can see that you've opened your mind
Silver linings can disappear, but they always shine

It's always a Mystery, not what it seems to be
It's always a Mystery, just like you and me

This reminds me of how a few months ago I was looking to buy 2 computer monitors and found that a used Dell monitor at Discount Electronics was $50 higher in price than the same model, brand new, at Fry's.

 LOL ! No one asks OP why he doesn't buy the CHEAPER item even NEW and under warranty at Academy.

Who knows what the 'used kayak' seller may have done with his... poop, pee, jizzed, etc., am I wrong?

To answer the OP: "because there's no rule or law preventing them from adding whatever price they want to their used items."

The value of anything is what a buyer is willing to spend! If he waits long enough some idiot will pay him $375 for that kayak...

You sound like a couple people that bid on my Kayak. I want $500 for mine and it goes for $630. I had a couple people tell me they can get it for $400 brand new. Of course they can't cough up the link.

The seller knew the academy price was soo good, that it would sell out and he'd be there to prey on the one person who missed out but still wants a kayak.

They watch too many episodes of Storage Wars that contain on the spot price evaluations from a guy who calls himself the "mogul" because purchaser of pissed stained mattresses lacks pizzaz.

Normally, I list prices that are slightly under what I think it will sell for. That way, it's easy.

But, when I lived in the bay area, and my roommate moved out and left his crappy Ikea entertainment center behind. I checked Ikea's site, found out what the retail price, and listed it on Craigslist for $10 over retail. It sold in minutes. Ikea in Emeryville (OaklandBerkeley) had opened recently and my co-workers wouldn't shut up about it. I knew it would sell because people were so Ikea crazed at the time. Dumbasses.

In other news, your crap/treasure is what people are willing to pay for it.
