Apple Devices To Reach Parity With Windows PCs In 2014

"Horace Dediu writes at Aymco that in 2013 there were 18.8 times more Windows PCs sold than Macs, a reduction in the Windows advantage from about 19.8x in 2012. But the bigger story is how Apple's mobile platform including iOS devices has nearly reached the sales volume of Windows. In 2013 there were only 1.18 more Windows PCs than Apple devices sold. Odds are that in 2014 Apple and Windows will be at parity. Dediu says that the Windows advantage itself came from the way computing was purchased in the period of its ascent in the 1980s and 1990s 'when computing platform decisions were made first by companies then by developers and later by individuals who took their cues from what standards were already established. As these decisions created network effects, the cycle repeated and the majority platform strengthened.' There was concentration in decision making in the 80s so a platform could win by convincing 500 individuals who had the authority (as CIOs) to impose through fiat a standard on the centers of gravity of purchasing power. Today, with mobile products there are billions of decision makers. and the decision making process for buying computers, which began with large companies IT departments making decisions with multi-year horizons, has changed to billions of individuals making decisions with no horizons. Companies have become the laggards and individuals the early adopters of technology. 'Ultimately, it was the removal of the intermediary between buyer and beneficiary which dissolved Microsoft's power over the purchase decision,' concludes Dediu. 'The computer has become personal not just in the sense of how it's used but in the sense of how it's owned.' Finally, all the above is almost moot, given the rise of Android, something that is beating both Cupertino and Redmond alike."

A windows PC and a tablet are not the same comparison. Its pretty much understood that Apple dominates the tablet market and will increase market share for years to come. Its also understood that most people can get away with only using a tablet at home.

Mobile OS and desktop platform not nearly the same thing. Apple still took the wrong approach to the iPad...still need mouse, keyboard and pen precision to truly break through in the corporate world. You'll see iPads being used at cute coffee shops and local dive bars but it's too limiting a platform for real productivity.

The Surface Pro costs twice as much as an iPad Air, but it's 20 times the machine.

Oh, this is comparing sales, not OS numbers. Sales volumes obviously makes sense because a household may have each member owning an iOS product and upgrading yearly, but share a Windows desktop that's over 4 years old.

In otherwords, using stupid statistics to publish a crappy article.

Back in 1997, a coworker told me that Apple would not exist in 5 years. I almost bought $1,000 worth of stocks that year (83 shares at $12 each). If I had, it would be worth $92,000 today.

Look at the sales numbers, profitability, and the market share of the iPad in the tablet market compared to the Surface Pro and ask yourself again if you think Apple took the wrong approach

That makes no sense. Why would you buy the stocks if you believed your co-worker that Apple would be gone?

Point still stands. Why state that he almost bought them if he thought they were going out of business? Or if he didn't think so, why state that his friend thought so? Like we give a sht what his friend thought 17 years ago if it didn't affect him in a specific way. lol

I'm pretty sure the iPad was not primarily designed for the corporate world. Mouse, keyboard or stylus? lol just use a mini laptop. Defeats the purpose of the tablet.

I think everyone but the article writer is in agreement with that. Why compare Windows PCs to Apple mobile devices? Compare Windows tablets to Apple iPad. Windows phones to Apple iPhones. Windows PCs to Apple Macs.

I think they took the right approach to reach profitability and relevance, wrong approach to maintaining dominance. Jobs was known to be hard headed and strong arming people to having an experience he thought they wanted, not the experience they necessarily needed. Why do you think Google and Android were able to overtake the iPhone so quickly?

Had Apple provided a more powerful machine like the Pro it would have undoubtedly conquered the PC market by this point. Unfortunately they didn't, and opened the door for Windows machines once again. They laughed at Google and the T-Mobile G1 too when that came out.

Apple is a marketing company that parades as a tech company, and it works great for them and their stock holders right now. Unfortunately they are once again behind Windows in what the ultimate goal is, the merging of your pocket, your tab and your PC.

The thing is, ask a mac user, "Hey did you replace your macbook pro/air with an iPad?" and they will look at you sideways. However, tech writers and Apple daily write that PC users are ditching PCs in favor of an iPad. That doesn't make sense to me, if anything they are buying a PC instead of a macbook air/pro and then using said savings to buy an iPad.

Your comprehension may be skipping a beat when you read his post.

He almost bought the stock but didn't because of what his friend said.

Yeah I agree. Nobody is ditching a PC in favor of an iPad. And the few that do are the ones that didn't do much on a PC anyway other than check emails and surf the web or just have no knowledge on how to build or use one.

The only wrong approach is your attempt at understanding what an iPad is, what a laptop is, and how those devices fit in to the consumer and corporate worlds.

The consumer space is moving to mobile - no secret in that. Most users will be happy with a phone and/or phone+tablet combo in the next 3-5 years. That fight is still happening, as there are nearly 3 times as many Android phones as iPhones in the world, and Windows Phone is a distant 3rd.

Either way mobile does not translate to the business - where there are more than 300 million users worldwide. Companies simply can't abandon business applications and systems - which rely on PCs and PC architectures, and will for some time. The only thing that will eat in to traditional business applications is cloud services - where Microsoft is also a top 2 player (Azure is second to Amazon).

Whoever thinks Microsoft is in a losing battle doesn't have all the facts, and most bloggers and analysts are clueless. Microsoft's enterprise market continues to grow exponentially year after year, and businesses reliance on Microsoft products becomes greater along with the increased user count. Exchange, Azure, Lync, SQL, SharePoint, Office, Dynamics, Server, Hyper-V, Office 365... and even Windows. The list goes on. All of these products are GROWING every single day, just as Windows is.
