PRC detergent brand Qiobi has recently come out with an ad that literally shows the white washing a black man. We often discuss race relations here about the US but wondering what Clutchfans think about this.

This commercial plays upon a variety of racist stereotypes including the one of Black males as being sexual predators.

Also this isn't something new and there has been a lot of history of Asian brands marketing on racist imagery such as toothpaste Darlie that used to be called Darkie.

In Chinese the toothpaste is still called "Hei Ren" which means "black man" even though they've made the character on the logo white.

That's pretty horrible. At first I thought they were being progressive, and then I saw the second half of the commercial and was mortified.

We don't either but race issues are still big here.

The PRC is a major trading partner, with the world's second largest economy and is striving to be a major player on the World's stage. I think that would make issues of racism there important at least as a matter of discussion.

You are free though not to participate if you don't think it's worth your while.

It's racist, the Chinese have a long way to go when it comes to cultural acceptance.

That being said, I'm sure the Shanghai Sharks BBS has a discussion about it (chinese bigtexxx is defending it as we speak). We can condemn it here but they have to fix it over there.

It is definitely racist. That being said, it isn't as impactful as the same type of racism would be here, because they don't have a long history of keeping people of the African race as slaves, and then making sure they kept one race from voting, going to the same schools, etc.

It doesn't change the fact that it's racist, but the racism just doesn't have the historical context to it to make it as damaging.

Chinese people like many other cultures don't consider dark skin to be an attractive trait

this was true before they knew black people existed.

Why else do you see some Asian women wearing long sleeves and pants with an umbrella to the beach.

I though racism was a social construct of the pre-Confederate South.

Meanwhile a lot of Asians whine about being victim of racism in America. I can't stand the hypocrisy.
