Off the top of my head, bands that are better than the Cure:

    The Beatles
    The Stones
    Beach Boys
    Fleetwood Mac
    New Order
    Talking Heads
    Depeche Mode
    Jesus & Mary Chain
    The Olivia Tremor Control
    Blur
    Stereolab
    Radiohead
    Wilco
    Belle & Sebastian
    Super Furry Animals

I love The Cure, but wouldn't even put them in my top 10 for best ever.

Daft Punk is the correct answer.

Best band??... Probably not but to me and many many people the Cure are among their favorite and hold a special place in their lives as sort of the soundtrack to that part of their lives.

So while "bands" like the Rolling Stones or the Beatles are technically better, I doubt those bands really struct the emotional core that the Cure did and continue to do for future generations that find them at a certain point in their lives.

If we had to say what they are "the best" at I would say Robert Smith and co's ability to recreate themselves no through their look or public persona like a Madonna or whatever pop star is hot right now, but through the emotional core of their music. Nobody else I can think of can go from an album like p*rnography to a completely different sound in Siamese Dream and both were very much The Cure.

I don't know the exact ranking that the Cure will end up falling in at the end of their run but they certainly are worthy of top consideration and likely top 10. From a creatively unique perspective they might be top 5. Robert Smith alone is a pop icon who stands alongside pop greats like Bowie, Prince, Dylan, etc as icons of their genre.

Can't be the best band when they have the worst singer in the world.

Best band ever or currently? Ever, no. Currently, they're on a short list. All time, probably top 20. Best album, Disintegration.

I absolutely love the Cure, but I wouldn't say they were in the top 10 best bands in the world. Probably not in my top 20. But I did see them on this tour and Roberts voice has truly held up well over the years..unlike Ian McCollucj of Echo and the Bunnymen whose voice has been damaged.

I'd say Head On The Door.

Was never really a "Fascination Street" fan..but boy they rocked it live
