Stabbed 11 times at a night club is what I heard on the radio. Upgraded to fair condition.

    Wow he got cut up
BOSTON (AP) -- Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics was repeatedly stabbed early Monday outside a nightclub and was listed in fair condition.

The 22-year-old forward underwent surgery, with one of the wounds to his neck, Boston radio station WEEI-AM said, quoting an unidentified hospital source.

The station said Pierce was able to walk to the hospital. A spokeswoman at New England Medical Center would not release information except to list his condition.

The radio station said Pierce was stabbed 11 times.

Boston police spokesman Kevin Jones said Pierce was stabbed at about 1 a.m. on Stuart Street. Jones said there were no suspects.

Celtics spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz confirmed Pierce was in the hospital but he had no other details.

The Celtics are to begin training camp next Monday.

Pierce apparently was in Boston to participate in Red Auerbach's charity golf tournament, which was to begin Monday. Auerbach, a former coach and general manager, said by telephone from his home in Washington that he didn't know about the stabbing.

Pierce, 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds, averaged 19.5 points for the Celtics last season. He ranks second in the NBA in steals per game with 2.08.

Pierce, Boston's most complete player, played both forward and guard last season and is a cornerstone of a team trying to break a streak of five non-playoff seasons.

He is one of the few mainstays on a team that has undergone considerable personnel change since Rick Pitino became coach before the 1997-98 season. Pierce is an outstanding defender and aggressive rebounder with good shooting range.

The 16th and most recent NBA championship they won was in 1986, their third in six seasons of the Larry Bird era.

Pierce was an All-American at Kansas and was selected in the first round of the 1998 draft after his junior season.

As a rookie, he was 10th in NBA three-point field goal percentage and averaged 16.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.71 steals in 34 minutes per game. Last season, his 19.5 points and 35.4 minutes per game were both second on the team, trailing Antoine Walker. He was second in the NBA in steals per game with 2.08.
