How many ways can Pat Riley screw with Stan Van Gundy? Riles' demanding compensation is lowest class.

Where is the Commish to put a kibosh on this classless act?

The Rockets also gave the Knicks a draft pick for JVG. It's all business for Riley especially with division rival.

Brian Schmitz | Sentinel Staff Writer

The Orlando Magic have offered Stan Van Gundy the job as their head coach to replace Billy Donovan, but his team -- the Miami Heat -- could hold up the deal.

Sources close to the situation told the Sentinel that the Heat entered the Magic's bizarre coaching saga Tuesday, threatening to possibly ask for compensation from the Magic for Van Gundy.

Van Gundy has a year left on his contract as a consultant with the Heat.

Heat Coach and President Pat Riley could demand draft picks from the Magic for Van Gundy, who was replaced by Riley as Heat coach in December 2005.

The Magic want Van Gundy to replace Donovan, who asked out of his contract with the team last weekend after signing a five-year, $27.5 million deal on Friday in Orlando.

Legal representatives for the Magic and Donovan were in contact Tuesday, but no settlement had been announced by the close of the business day. Late Tuesday, ESPN.com reported that a settlement had been reached.

A resolution could come today, allowing Donovan, 42, to return to coaching the Florida Gators by accepting UF's long-proposed contract extension.

The Magic finally gave up hope of persuading Donovan to change his mind after speaking with him several times Monday.

It was not known whether the Magic were trying to get Donovan to agree to a non-compete clause during the negotiations, meaning he would not be allowed to coach another NBA team for an undetermined period.

The Magic are under pressure to clear the way for Van Gundy, who has another offer on the table from the Sacramento Kings. He interviewed with the Kings twice, as recently as last weekend in Las Vegas.

Van Gundy wanted the Magic to resolve the Donovan situation before taking the job. He apparently called the league to find out what might happen if he signed with Orlando . . . and Donovan suddenly wanted to come back to the Magic before breaking his contract.

Van Gundy was the Magic's runner-up choice to Donovan. He prefers to coach the Magic and stay in Florida, but he doesn't want to miss the opportunity with the Kings. He set a tentative deadline for today to take one of the jobs.

Van Gundy, brother of former NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy, also was offered the head coaching position with the Indiana Pacers, but said he turned down the job.

If the Heat are seeking compensation for Van Gundy, the Magic this year have only three second-round picks heading into the June 28 draft.

They don't have a first-round pick this year, having traded it to the Detroit Pistons in February 2006. The Magic dealt center Kelvin Cato and the pick to the Pistons for point guard Carlos Arroyo and power forward Darko Milicic.

The Orlando position is definitely superior to the Sac position!

Riley and the Heats are being jerks with this. Have they not screwed Van Gundy enough?

They haven't (yet) said anything about demanding compensation. The article just says that they can.

it's not trade a pick for a coach. It's compensation for your incoming coach because of his contract with another team.

eg. The Rockets gave the Knicks a draft pick to sign JVG.

This is really nothing new. Heck, the Knicks got a first round pick and a million bucks for Riley.

JVG walked away from the Knicks. SVG was pushed away from Heat bench, and reportedly Riley gave permission to teams to interview him for coaching positions.

BTW - thanx Ming D for adding the link.

Nothing new? JVG walked away from Knicks' bench DURING the season. Riley pushed SVG aside from bench and then, and then gave permission, reportedly, to teams to interview SVG for coaching openings.

    This flat out smells.

PS 'just' one of O's 3 2nds? Just a classless act.

Is Stan Van Gundy really worth giving up draft picks?

It's a good business decison to ask for draft picks, especially with a division rivals. SVG knows so much about the tendency of their players. I guess you already know what Don Nelson did to Dirk in the playoffs.

As your concern of other affairs, I think you can book a hotel room and arrange a meeting between Riley and the Gundys and let them sort things out themselves. I would really appreciate if you video the whole thing for our amusement. :)

I was talking about when Riley left the Knicks for the Heat.

The Heat are just trying to get a second round pick from Orlando, of which they have THREE, BTW. I think The Magic can afford to give up a second round pick. Shrewd? Yes, but Riley didn't win six championships by being Mr. Nice Guy.

I'm pretty sure that if Orlando doesn't want to give up a pick and Van Gundy wants the Orlando job THAT bad, Riley isn't going to go Cinderella on him and force him to stay with Miami.
