Under Adelman, our raw players seem to develop best with 1/2 a season of sitting.

During Adelman's tenure here, we can basically break down his development of young players into 3 categories.

Starts to play immediately: Budinger, Hill, Wafer(sort of counts but not really)

Sit for 1/2 a season, then begin to get minutes:
    Brooks, Landry, Patterson

Sit for 1/2 a season, then sit some more, then gone: Taylor, Dorsey, Green, and perhaps some others who don't really matter

I know people scoff at the whole "Adelman's offense takes time" thing. But there could be some merit to it. Our best young players, even though PP is still a bit too soon to make conclusions, seem to develop best by sitting for a while. Brooks played 50 games in his first year. Landry played half a season. Patterson sat for quite a while before finally getting some minutes.

OTOH, those who came immediately and played, notably Hill and Budinger, seemed to have their development kind of stalled. While obviously, players like Dorsey and Taylor just didn't work out and never got a chance.

I say this mainly for the "Free Terence Williams" crowd.
Perhaps the best thing for TWill right now really is to sit and learn. Adelman is a great coach, and it's not like young players come to Houston to die. On the contrary, they generally prosper. But it still takes time. Even the NBA-ready Patterson, who's probably 100 times smarter than TWill both on and off the court, needed to sit before he can contribute. Williams, if he wasn't a moron, should understand this and have patience. He should know that it's by developing his game that he can make serious dough.

In kung fu movies don't people always have to learn patience first before learning to fight? ;) I think T-will will be in the lineup after thursday though.

But if senile Adelman would have played Gerald Wallace, the Kings would have won a championship.

AS much as i'd like to see what T-Will can bring... i would have absolutely no problem being in his position - make millions for not doing much other than going to practice once or twice/week, and going through film study and shootaround 3-4 times/week?

Seems like a pretty sweet deal to me.

Don't you think you're giving Adelman too much credit? The fact is, he plays the players who thinks he will win the game, he doesn't really treat PT as a development tool. You don't go from not being good enough to play to posting a double double overnight, the main reason Patterson sat for half a season was because Adelman thought other players were better than him, and not because he needed more development.

So its not like Patterson really wasn't ready to contribute and he needed to sit down for a half a season learning RA's system. RA just didn't think he was significantly better over Jeffries (at the time), Hill, Hayes and Scola to warrant playing time. It wasn't until Hill started sucking eggs that Adelman felt it was time to give Patterson a chance. With T-will, I suspect Adelman just doesn't think he's smart enough to get his offense, and therefore not worth wasting PT on. So unless we end up with a player shortage or T-will starts walking on water during practice, I really don't think T-will will get any PT, no matter how long he sits.

I'm actually less concerned about the process as the result. The reasoning behind Adelman's actions, whether you're right or not, doesn't really concern me. My point is that there doesn't seem to be any negative effects from players sitting for a while under Adelman. Whether it's because of development or otherwise, the results remain the same.

In the end, I don't believe TWill sitting out the rest of the season will kill his career. Or that we have somehow wasted a 1st round pick on him. Because many players under Adelman have gone through the same process and came out fine. Now if TWill still doesn't get playing time by the middle of next season, then I would start putting him the category of a Jermaine Taylor as someone Morey have to dump for nothing.

P-Pat was said to be one of the most NBA ready rookies before coming into the NBA. IMO it has more to do with the players ability. If you can play you stay on the court ( Bud, Brooks, Landry). If you can't you're a bench warmer.

Twill might be the exception. At least all the other players got a chance to play, Twill hasn't had that oppurtunity yet.
