This definitely deserves a thread of its own. From Calvin Watkins and Marc Stein:

Thats the best way to go.

Can blow it up once it is clear that third piece is not coming.

Cannot see Durant leaving Westbrook just to join Harden, especially with the Rockets being behind the Thunder in the standings.

But hey...I'd love to be wrong.

Staying with Westbrick would only be a one year thing, there's no chance he stays in OKC when his contract is up.

    Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnn.......

Kevin Durant is not going to sign with the Rockets as a free agent. There are far better options available.

Please explain to me why KD would pick playing for a team that is 26-25 without a head coach over playing for a team that is 44-4.

If we are going through this "pin the tail on the top free agent" game again, count me out. It made sense in the past when the Rockets were projecting upwards, or even going after LMA after making the WCF.

Now the Rockets have nothing to see free agents on other than Harden and a sharp GM ... which isn't unique at this point.

I don't see us getting Durant at all. Why would he leave OKC for a much worse team? Why not go to the Warriors and win 5 rings? Why not just go to LA or Miami or Chicago with a huge market and a organization that can build around stars?

Unless Durant and Harden are secret lovers, I see no reason why he would come to Houston.

I say, cash out on Howard now while he still has half a season left on his contract. Once he expires we get nothing for him. But whatever everything is screwed anyways.

I agree it's unlikely to happen, but FWIW, I think your logic (while very popular) is flawed. The comparison isn't the current Rockets vs. the current Thunder. The comparison would be the current Rockets plus Durant relative to the current Thunder.

Now yes, it isn't quite that simple, either. If the Rockets want to sign Durant while keeping Howard, of course they'd have to let a few smaller pieces go. Likewise, it's also possible the Thunder could make some offseason moves to slightly improve their roster around Durant.

I just think from the standpoint of Durant's decision, it's flawed conceptually to compare the current Rockets to the current Thunder... since one of them already has Durant.

Durant knows that Westbrook will be out the door ASAP too........ but it doesn't mean that KD will sign up for the Rockets dumpster fire.

I would say there's a much better chance that Westbrook and Durant remain in OKC longterm than Durant choosing to go to Houston.

[ESPN] Rockets will watch Dwight Howard walk in free agency, plan failed pursuit of Kevin Durant; Harden left wondering what the hell is going on around here?

    :p

Morey had meaningful trade talks involving Dwight in December?

I disagree. There's zero chance Westbrook stays in OKC and there's a small chance Durant comes to Houston. The small chance is larger than the zero chance.

IMO Durant is almost certainly leaving OKC, the question is where he goes. If the Warriors are a legitimate possibility, he'd never pick Houston over that.

This is very true. I should have clarified with this in mind.

I think this plan is doomed to fail but whatever. I guess the temptation is too big and Morrey has to try.
I give us like 0.1% chance to get Durant and meanwhile while we sit and wait, Batum will sign elsewhere, and if Dwight plays well in the playoffs some desperate Knicks, Portland Charlotte team or even Boston will throw him over 25 per.

Once again will be left with going all in and getting burn in the process of not getting KD. Team should focus on trying to get something that will help the team this season. No, trading Howard will not be the answer. The team needs to focus on trading for PF to take over TJ.

    Basically this........

They won't pay Howard what some team flush with cap space will..... Durant will give the Rockets a courtesy visit because of Harden and ultimately the Rockets will get left holding the **** bag.

The Rockets will over pay for DMO but half of clutchfans will somehow view him as a future star.
