According to Todd Akin, GOP U.S. Representative and Senate candidate, a number of doctors told him so.

So, is this a scientific fact?

According to one study quoted by TPM:

Not sure if this study includes both legitimate and illegitimate rape (whatever these terms mean), and whether the pregnancy rate is any lower than resulting from non-rape intercourse considering all other factors.

What a moronic and morally repugnant thing to say. Even if believes it, his handlers should have told him it is not the kind of thing you want to say out loud.

5 percent of rapes result in pregnancy. That is a significant percentage when you account for the victims that are on birth control, are post-menopausal, or report the attack and take the morning after pill. Apparently this magical mechanism e Congressman references does not work very well.

Totally horrible thing to say. That being said, I don't think it matters what political party the guy represents. There are idiots of all political persuasions. Seems a little unfair to headline the thread as a blanket statement of a party when it is one idiot saying it.

If you hooked Carl Herrera to a lie detector he would tell you the entire party feels this way, and believe it to be true.

Even if he is uniformly condemned and asked to withdraw.

The GOP doesn't give a **** about women's bodily autonomy, hence idiotic rationalizations like in the OP's video and countless giddyup posts.

He probably has some data as an illegitimate rapist to prove his assertions.

This is the kind of remark that can single-handedly throw an election. Reminds me of Clayton Williams blowing a sure thing to Ann Richards many years ago.

**** like this makes me want to limit voting on abortion to females only. No guy this dumb should have a say on a woman's body.

And now you know why Democrats were rooting for Akin to win the Missouri primary.

It was only a matter of time before he started talking. The guy is a grade A moron and could very well blow a seat that Republicans should win.

In the Senate, the Tea Party has been Democrats' best friend. There would no question about GOP control next year if not for tea party crazies in both 2010 and this year.

if you're a male and get raped, you more than likely won't get pregnant.
    But I still say it's 70/30.

I'm curious as to what these "natural ways" are for women to prevent a pregnancy. If true, it could potentially put Trojan, Magnum, and other contraceptive makers out of business for good.

The comment is repulsive, asinine and uneducated. That being said, since this is not a GOP position, the title of this thread is misleading.

Of course not every member of the GOP believes this, but this guy is the official GOP nominee for U.S. Senator in Missouri. He also has served in the House of Representatives under the GOP since 2001. GOP voters and party bosses probably know what kind of guy he is and they still nominated him. This is not just some random party member.

Also, the official GOP nominee for VP of the United States, Paul Ryan, like Todd Akin, also does not believe in a rape exception for legal abortion and co-sponsored a bill that would have "limited the federal abortion coverage exemption only to victims of 'forcible rape' and women whose physical health was in danger from her pregnancy" (more detail here: http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/08/todd-akin-paul-ryan-mitt-romney.php).
