Why? He's just now getting back to where he was "supposed" to be to start the year. You want to derail that progress for mental stability? Or to leave on a "high" note? Even if he has some bad starts for the rest of the year, he's shown that he isn't incapable of putting it together... and the stuff is still there. Again, Appel strikes me as somebody who actually will need higher competition levels/bigger venues/more pressure to light a fire under him to succeed.... as he did his entire senior year after turning down first round money.
I think it would be good to leave on a high note personally. After the season he had, he needs to leave on a high note.
I don't think he's as sensitive as you think he is... and if he is, he's never going to make it big or be able to handle real pressure. If he's healthy, he pitches now... pitches in the AFL... has a full camp/spring training (something he has yet to have), and possibly is a dark-horse to make the big league rotation (but likely will start the year at AAA, and get the July-ish call-up, whenever super 2 deadline passes).
He's going to be pitching in the AFL. Why take a longer break than necessary just to have to build back up for that? He should keep pitching since he basically lost the first couple of months of the season anyway. Build up that endurance.
Yep... perhaps he's pitching for one of those patented Luhnow guaranteed deals that earns him the big league promotion once he signs.
What is going on with the Aiken situation? Anyone know...I'm confused. Some sites are reporting Selig would be open to extending the signing deadline. This sounds a bit out of line with rules.
All of a sudden Jankowski has garnered the ability to strike everyone out. 9 more in 6 innings against the stout Frisco lineup.
With a career 10 K/9 mark, he probably had that ability already. <script type="text/javascript" src="http://widgets.sports-reference.com/wg.fcgi?css=1&site=br&url=%2Fminors%2Fplayer.cgi%3Fid%3Djankow001jor&div=div_standard_pitching"></script>
I like that Jankowski's stingy with issuing walks, regardless of role. Despite the fact that he'll be 26 for a vast majority of next season, I think he'll have a shot to contribute to the big league club.
Age doesn't come to me as of big of a factor when you are bound for the bullpen anyways. He could come up at 26/27 and be a MRP for a long time... cost effective and part of the reason why building good pitching depth in our system is so important.
J.D. Davis just hit his 10th home run of the year. It's a 3-run shot that puts Quad Cities up 11-2 on Cedar Rapids in the 6th.
