Except, it's a 3 way trade where the Rockets don't get Dwight...

Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu, and Courtney Lee to the Clippers; Eric Bledsoe, DeAndre Jordan, Terrence Williams, Brian Cook, Minnesota's unprotected 2012 first-round pick and a future Clippers' first-round pick (2014 or later) to Orlando; Chris Kaman, the Clippers' 2012 second-round pick and a future Clippers' first-round pick (2016 or later) to Houston.

This is the only potential offer that trumps what New Jersey has on the table, and it also gets Howard to a preferred destination in L.A. The Clippers can offer the Magic similar cap relief to the New Jersey deal, a likely high lottery pick from Minnesota, an athletic young point guard in Bledsoe and a promising big man in Jordan, in addition to a 2012 pick of their own.

The Magic will push hard to get Eric Gordon out of this trade, but I believe L.A.'s offer wins even without Gordon. Jordan isn't quite as good as Lopez, but the draft picks and prospects the Clips can add to this deal are better. Also, Jordan would have to agree to a sign-and-trade to Orlando for this deal to work; there are worse places to end up.

I threw in another wrinkle to this deal and sent Kaman and a first-round pick to Houston for Courtney Lee, but this deal also works if Kaman goes straight to Orlando. Kaman and Lee both have expiring deals, but Houston needs a center a lot more than a wing, while the Clippers would be in the opposite situation following a Howard trade.

Chris Kaman is a nice piece but he'd be a stop gap. If you want to go full blown tank/youth movement, giving up Courtney Lee & Twill doesn't seem to be the pieces you give up.

Horrible. There is no reason to participate in this.

No thanks. We dont even get Deandre Jordan. We get a run down past his prime Kaman. No thanks. Get out of here and stop offering the worst deals already. Always get the short end in the deals they suggest.

Knowing the Clippers, even if they got Howard, that 1st in 2016 or so will probably be quite valuable.

This isnt so bad if its a unprotected 1st round pick.

If you're an insider and can leave comments, please tell Hollinger where he can stick this trade if he thinks Houston should get scrubs or scraps of the banquet table meant for other teams. There is still no love for Houston, esp from ESPN writers.

How is that trade possible from a salary prospective for us?

Anyway, I don't think that's that bad of a trade. We open up a roster spot for us, get a late second rounder (euro stash candidate) and a late first. Chris Kaman is only 29 and he seemed okay in FIBA in summer. He's an expiring contract so it's not a long term burden. And if he's decent we have some advantage in terms of resigning or flipping, right?

Look at the salaries the current bigs are expected to get - it's redic.

I'd like a little more from trade maybe another second rounder and a backup SG but it's not horrible...

That being said it's not a home run either.

F**k Hollinger. Yeah, let's help the Clippers destroy the rest of the league and get us a broken-down center.

Why do we get reamed??? Wtf, we get a first rounder and second rounder for non starters. Lee isnt staying with us next year if he isnt given more minutes and Twill isnt doing anything. Your classification for reamed and sucks for us is stupid just cause we dont get Howard. I like it. Two picks that can be used as trade assets.

No, its absolutely guaranteed to be a late first rounder if the Rockets ever get a hold of that pick.

Assuming they did not change it in the new CBA (and I can't imagine they would), there is a 7-year rule for future draft pick obligations, and the Stepien Rule prevents teams from trading consecutive future picks.

Now the Clippers have already traded away a future first rounder to Boston (via the Zombie Sonics) for Eric Bledsoe. This obligation runs through 2016, when the pick becomes unprotected. Whenever the pick is sent, it will be 2 years after that when the hypothetical 2014 pick will be sent, and another 2 years after that when finally the Rockets would get their hypothetical 2016 pick.

Here's the rub, however; the pick must be conveyed by 2018 (7 years after 2012), otherwise the teams must come up with alternate compensation. Usually, it's either a few 2nd rounders, or straight cash; both pretty worthless in regards to improving the team.

Therefore, the ONLY way the Rockets would ever see that pick is if LA is outside the top 10 in one of 2012, 2013, 2014; THEN, the protection on the pick they send to Orlando would have to be fulfilled by 2016 at the very latest, and FINALLY, the Rockets might have 1 or 2 years to attempt at collecting the pick before the obligation expired, and that's dependent on how much protection the Clippers put on THAT pick.

Basically, you'd need a scenario where the Clippers were awesome for 4 years, convey the picks to Boston and Orlando, then Dwight and Blake collide knees and fall on top of Eric Gordon's shooting wrist and they go back to sucking until 2018 when they stupidly leave the pick unprotected.

I'm as big a fan of always trying to get SOMETHING for a player, but that's a really bad asset to have. Hollinger is doing the classic "polishing a dog turd of a trade by adding in 1. $3M cash, 2. 2nd Rounders 3. Late-1st Rounders that are highly likely to turn into 2nd rounders".

TL;DR version: Bad for Rockets, unlikely 2016 pick is ever conveyed.

I don’t think the trade is that insulting either. Of course we’re the ones who would like Dwight Howard, but we don’t have **** to get him.

Kaman would improve us next year more than Lee. And yes, Kaman’s contract expires next year, but I don’t think we will keep Lee long term either. I bet another team will throw full MLE money at Lee, just like Wes Matthews got, and Morey will think that’s too much for a backup on a non-contending team. Kaman plus a first isn’t a bad haul for Lee, and getting T-Will and his nasty attitude out for a second rounder is fine by me.
