What Player in NBA History Would You Build a Team Around?

There's the usual G.O.A.T. threads and all-time team threads, but I don't recall ever seeing this before, and I just wanted to see everyone's responses. First: If you could choose any player in NBA history to build a team around, who would it be? Second: Now, with that player chosen, build a team around him, again, choosing from anyone in history. Starting lineup and bench. The purpose of this is NOT to make an all-time team or anything, but choose who you're going to build your team around, add a secondary star or two, and then add role players that you feel would compliment your star and fit how you want your team to play. Again, this is about constructing a TEAM, so consider how your choices will mesh together. Select your star, give what kind of complimentary players you'll surround him with, and your team philosophy.

With some greats, the discussion is about how they either had or didn't have a supporting cast. So if you surround you chosen great with a supporting cast which is specifically tailored to their strengths and weaknesses so that everyone's on an even keel, I'm curious to see what we'd have, and at the end you can give your opinion on which team looks the best.

    Kareem

    or

    Shaq

    or

    Jordan

    1. Michael Jordan
    2. Larry Bird
    2. Magic Johnson
    4. Hakeem Olajuwon (sorry mr. Ewing, youve been replaced)
    5. Clyde Drexler
    6. Scottie Pippen
    7. Charles Barkley
    8. Tim Duncan (Karl Malone is not allowed on my team)
    9. John Stockton
    10. Shaq (Christian Laettner should have never been on the team in the 1st place)
    11. Bob Sura (we dont need you David Robinson)
    12. Mario Elie :D

I think you have to have parameters to this. Otherwise, it's HARD NOT to pick HOFers and all-stars.

I'm going to say Oscar Roberston.

No, I don't care if it was different back then.

If you can average a triple double then, you can EASILY do it now.

There's no way the Big "O" could get double digit rebounds now. I agree that he'd easily be averaging over 15 assists a game these days though.

It would have to be a big man in my case. Although I have never watched him play, Wilt and Kareem would be on the top of my list. If I had to choose two players to build a team around, it would be Wilt and Jordan, that would be 20 championships in a row right there in only 10 seasons (yes, they would be handing the trophy to them ahead of time and skip the playoffs altogether since no opponent would show up to play).

Even in Today's game? I think with the new rules and new defenses the NBA is a guard's league. Big men aren't as dominant as they once were IMO.

I'd build my team around a stud guard like Jordan/Kobe/Tmac

Then explain why six of the last seven NBA titles have gone to Duncan and Shaq...

    Jordan.

Walton (league's leading shot blocker who also runs the offense through the low post? I'll take it.)

Bill Russell certainly wasn't the most talented or dominant player in the history of the NBA but I think he was probably the smartest of them all therefore I would build a team around him.

    Maybe something more definitive like:

    2 Hall of Famers
2 All-Stars (not Hall of Famers)
8 Players who were never Hall of Famers or All-Stars

I would start off with Wilt, my secondary star would have to be a great point guard, like a Mark Jackson or John Stockton. Gus Johnson from the old bullets would be my 4. my three would probably be a utility guy that does a little of everything some one like Robert Horry, he can block shots, play D and kill you with a three when you least expect it. Joe Dumars would be my 2, but he is more of a secondary star

    Bench
    Ellie
    Ellie
    Ellie
    Chucky brown :D

the dream and my secondary star would be t-mac.

pg: chauncey billups | derek fisher | steve kerr
sg: tracy mcgrady | brent barry | wesley person
sf: bruce bowen | shane battier | kyle korver
pf: dwight howard | robert horry | pat garrity
c: hakeem olajuwon | theo ratliff | elden campbell

I prefer a modern style, so that's the kind of players I'm rolling with.

outside of dwight and my three centers, everyone can knock down the trey.
