Radio station KILT (610 AM) continues to hold a substantial lead over KBME (790 AM) in the spring Arbitron book. But, once again, it's astonishing to note how sports talk continues to perform in this market compared to Dallas-Fort Worth.

For the April-June ratings period, KILT had a 1.7 rating, down a tenth of a point from the winter book, to .4 for KBME, also down a tenth of a point for adults age 25 through 54. For men 25-54, KILT climbed a tenth of a point to 3.1, and KBME declined two-tenths to .7.

In afternoon drive time, the main point of competition for the two sports talk stations, KILT with Marc Vandermeer and Rich Lord climbed two-tenths of a point to 2.1 in persons 25-54 while KBME with Charlie Pallilo dropped a tenth to .8.

In the target afternoon drive demo, men 25-54, the Rockets helped KILT climb nine-tenths of a point over the winter book to 3.9, seventh-best in the market, while KBME dropped a tenth to 1.4.

"Growth is still incredibly slow," said Ken Charles, program director for the Clear Channel Houston cluster that includes KBME. "It's tough going against the Rockets' flagship station (KILT) and the Astros' flag (KTRH).

"We don't expect to play in the ratings game until next year, so there's nothing that surprises me now."

If you combine the two Houston sports talk stations, you come up with a 3.8 total for men 25-54 weekdays from 6 a.m. to midnight.

In Dallas-Fort Worth, KTCK, the Ticket, is No. 2 in the market in the same demo at 7.8.

In the all-day, persons age 12-plus ratings that Arbitron releases to all interested parties (demos are provided to clients only), KTCK and its simulcast partner KTDK-FM rank 12th in Dallas to 23rd in Houston for KILT and 33rd for KBME.

In other markets, WEEI in Boston is tied for No. 1, KNBR in San Francisco is 11th, KFAN in Minneapolis-St. Paul ranks 12th, WDAE in Tampa-St. Petersburg ranks 17th, WFAN in New York is 17th and WEAE in Pittsburgh is 20th.

    Four DVRs, no waiting

Curt Smith, author of Voices of the Game, to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on the decision by the St. Louis Cardinals to drop KMOX as their flagship station next season in favor of lower-powered KTRS: "sad, selfish, self-defeating and, in the long run, incredibly stupid."

"In my view, as a student of broadcasting, the St. Louis Cardinals are much less the St. Louis Cardinals because of what occurred," Smith said.

Of course, if you're an Astros fan, that's not half bad. ...

Former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon will work with Craig Bolerjack on selected NFL games on CBS.

Also, Bob Davie will replace Mike Gottfried alongside Ron Franklin for ESPN's Saturday prime-time college football games. Jason Sehorn and Tim Brown will join Chris Meyers in the latest incarnation of FSN's NFL pregame show, which premieres Sept. 9. ...

FSN says that reporter Carolyn Hughes will not return to FSN West or FSN West 2 in the wake of recent reports about her relationship with Dodgers pitcher Derek Lowe. The L.A. Daily News reports Hughes has been banned from the Dodgers clubhouse and the Dodger Stadium press box. ...

NBA TV will have first crack at announcing the 2005-2006 NBA schedule at noon today. ...

FSN Houston's weekly Texans Huddle show hosted by Patti Smith and Bart Enis will tape at 7 p.m. Wednesdays at the Fox Sports Grill at the Galleria. The show airs at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Why is sports talk so big in Dallas and not H-town?

That's been an ongoing question for years...

or the question should be... Why is sports so big in Dallas and not H-Town?

don't fool yourself. sports aren't as big a deal in Dallas as you might think. when their teams suck..people don't show up. just like virtually EVERYWHERE else minus a few rare exceptions. the mavs were fan-less for nearly a decade. they couldn't give those seats away. the ballpark seats about 10K more than Minute Maid does...and they've never drawn 3 million fans in a season.

as for sports radio there...it's hardly sports radio at all. it's mens' entertainment radio. much more so than it is here...i mean by far! dallas was one of the original markets for sports radio that did very well early on. and their product used to be far superior in terms of real sports radio. not the case anymore...but it sells.

And maybe the other stations in Dallas are bad and the sports talk up there wins by default?
