Does anyone on this forum have any personal or unique anecdotes to tell about a violation of their 1st Amendment rights? Keep in mind, the 1st Amendment includes religion, press, assemble peaceably, and petition, not just the freedom of speech. I'm sure there are a few Muslims on this bored, maybe even some people who hold extremist views, or socialist standards. Just wondering if anything peculiar has happened to you, if friends or acquaintances or the government ever suppressed you.

Personally, I guess the most extreme thing I've come across happened to a Hindu priest we know. He gave a morning prayer at the House of Representatives, only to have 3 evangelists intrude on his proceedings and classify America as "One nation under Jesus Christ". The poor priest didn't know what to do. He stuttered his way through the prayer.

I was about to start a thread on this, given the ruling described below. One problem with your question, is that we may not know about violations to our 1st Amendment rights...

Yes! Technology like this in the hands of the locals means more topless celebrities on the internet...

This is an example of religious intolerance, but not a violation of first amendment rights. The evangelists were also private citizens on public grounds, and seem to have been asserting their free speech rights as much as your friend was.

Well the protesters then had their free speech rights violated, for they were immediately arrested.

Didnt the supreme court strike down that provision recently. I remember hearing that it'll be different during this upcoming election since the provision should be gone.

    Another one:

    The "Fairness" Doctrine.

The government would tell broadcasters what they can broadcast politically in the name of "fairness."

Anyone required to move to a "protest zone" or "free-speech area" during a presidential or campaign visit have had their 1st amendment violated.

Hmm, "free-speech area" = double plus good

Rimmy...you should know better...NONE of the examples you posted have anything to do with the First Amendment...maybe the 4th Amendment, but certainly not the first.

OrangeRowdy...only the government can violate the first amendment. A private citizen or business cannot violate the first amendment. It only guarantees that "Congress shall pass no law..."

What about a mandatory curfew for minors? They wouldn't risk getting arrested, therefore, would miss out on nightly activities, such as religious prayers, rallies, and death penalty protests.

I think this was already taken care of and the court recognized that the First Amendment was being violated to a minor extent and burdens minors who want to attend such events. I don't remember what the outcome was, I'll have to dig it out from my law book.

Preaching in public parks or other public properties. Local police have stopped me and others I know.

Some cities require ''noise" permits to speak in public places.

not to detract from the first amendment stories, because i find them interesting... but holy crap, a 106 page ruling on the patriot act violations? it's hard enough writing an 8 page history paper....

maybe i should hire this judge to write my next essay?

now back to the regular thread topic.
