You can't switch teams once you played one game for the Men's National Team of a country.

    Exactly.
Makes me think that they often treated Duncan as a foreigner because he and Raja were coming off Virgin Islands.....

He has no obligations to play and for a US player a Championship is more important than the Olympics...for most of them. It's not like China is in contention for a medal anyway. Does not matter much.
Can't talk for Lebron or Kobe, because they are ultra competitive, they just want to win everything.

If China had the most talented basketball players in the world, Lebron will renounce his US citizenship to form a super olympic team in China.

When I was in China back in Sept. they broadcast an interview with Jeremy Lin saying in Mandarin he would consider playing for China. This was prior to Linsanity here but he was already known there.

Watching the interview though I got the feeling he was saying that to be polite since he was visiting China at the time and I seriously doubt he would really go to play for the PRC. As others have noted he is American born plus I suspect his family fled the PRC during the Communist revolution and at least some of them are probably still bitter about it.

In all fairness, the Chinese basketball team has all the reasons to try to get a guy like JLin. But their country doesn't allow dual citizenship. Therefore if Lin wants to play in the London Olymipcs he has to give up his U.S. citizenship. The story cannot and should not be twisted as China demanding Lin to renounce citizenship.

Lin should understand why Team USA doesn't want him just yet. Actually it's better for him spend the summer on improving his games. If he is ever going to reprsent a country, USA should be the only country to play for. Cause this is where he grew up, learned his skills and made his name.

    Not going to happen.

First, he is Taiwanese and the relations between China and Taiwan are terrible.

Second, he is from the USA, he is not going to give up his citizenship and be at the beck and call of PRC.

The replies in this thread are embarrassing to read. Can't we at least get two facts straight?

    1. Athletes do this all the time.

    2. Taiwan isn't a country.

Now do I think Lin should do this? Well, I don't give a crap because Olympics basketball is boring

It's uncommon for athletes to renounce their current citizenship, just to play basketball in the Olympics or World Championships. I can't think of any NBA players that has done it. Who were the ones that did it in 2008?

Depends on who you ask.... there are many people that consider Taiwan a country.... regardless of how you want to define Taiwan, many Taiwanese do NOT like PRC.

Well, since the Olympics has already abandoned the amateur spirit, they might as well do away the citizenship thing. Just let countries operate like a pro sport clubs, signing whatever athletes they can to represent them.
