Since the season seems to be dwindling. Me and Friend were discussing this. We could not come to a consensus. Is David Carr . . .what he is .. . or did 72 Sacks wreck him and his career? Rocket River
Yes....as in yes to both. There's really no way of knowing for sure, but it's likely a combination of both. He wasn't that good, but taking a beating like he did certainly didn't help. That internal clock the qb's are supposed to have got smashed into a million pieces.
No. We didn't help, but he did not put in the time in meetings and film study and developing himself. He was one of these guys that thought he was talented enough just to show up and practice a little and that would be enough.
I can't think of a better indicator that Kubiak needs to be fired than the fact we're discussing David f&$@ing Carr with 3 games left in the season.
This. Carr even resisted what little coaching he got. Never worked on his game, privately and publicly pointed the finger anywhere but at his chest. A strong willed coach may have broke him in...but most would have just kicked him off the team.
Wow really!? David Carr has every chance to prosper in the NFL, it is obvious it was not the Texans because he has sucked on other teams as well!

Sacked 72 times. Probably knock to the ground another 150. By 300 lb behemoths. I am not saying that Carr would have ever been an average QB ... but ... the pounding he took had to have had an effect. Look at Schaub. He is performing better now that he is not getting sacked as much.
Those sacks didn't create his weak sidearm throwing style that made it impossible for him to throw across the line of scrimmage. Or the fact that he stared holes into his primary route and never learned basics like checking off the safety.
I think the sacks did hurt Carr's confidence but I don't think he really had *it* to begin with. He was just one of those guys with a strong arm who was put at quarterback and could get by with his talent in college. After all these years of coaching and experience he can't beat out a pathetic Alex Smith in San Francisco. He just was never really good enough.
I think you get used to losing and it hard for to win. I thinkn the first couple of years with the Oilers ruined Warren Moon. He could never get the negative thought out of his head and found ways to lose even when we had a superior team.
That may be, but I also think the team took too much of the blame for the sacks too. A lot of those sacks were on Carr, because his pocket awareness was so poor. His real undoing was that he was just a knucklehead. I mean, any guy that can run out of bounds for a loss, instead of throwing the ball away... as many times as he did... well, that's just moronic beyond words. Add all that to the sack total too. The Texans are definitely not to blame for that.
I have never seen a quarterback create so many saacks, the guy was pathetic. He has no one to blame but himself
Whether Carr would've prospered with another team is up to debate. But what's NOT debatable was that he was the worst fit for the Texans. That a QB like him had no chance to succeed here given the circumstances. QBs who could've survived our expansion would be someone like Manning with ridiculously quick release and presence, or a Vick/McNabb type who could move around when the pocket collapses. A pocket QB who didn't have ungodly feel for the defense was bound to suck.
