Minimum team salary is set at 90% of the salary cap. Next year's salary cap is expected to jump from 67 to 89 million, which means the bare minimum a team can spend is going to be somewhere around 80 million.

To put that in perspective, more than half the league will be > 20 million dollars below the minimum come July 1st.

What does that mean for the Rockets? Well, for one, I think it means Corey Brewer's contract might be way easier to dump than we think.

Teams that know they won't be getting Durant, Horford, Conley, or any other max free agents will need to add salary, and a contract like Brewer's won't seem all that bad at the scale we'll be dealing with next year. It's possible that a second rounder and some cash might be enough to unload the only bad contract the Rockets really have, and that would be amazing imo.

If we had the Corey of the 14-15 season, I would agree his contract would be easy to dump. However, this year Corey was just plain awful. He seemed like an overpaid D-League player out there.

Any team willing to take him will know we're desperate to get rid of him. If Hinkie was still with Philly, we might have been able to sell him on a "veteran leadership" aspect but yeah...Stretch provision or rotting on the bench is all I can see for him at this point.

It's not a matter of being desperate to get rid of him. Yes, the other team will know what they're getting and why the Rockets need to trade him (generally, to create cap space).

It's a question of a team like the 76ers of the last few years just needing to take on any contracts by rule. And in that scenario, if they also got another asset - be it future draft pick, be it an oversea asset, be it Harrell - then it might be worth it to them.

True, but with the cap rise and the large pool of players entering free agency. I see more teams giving out larger contracts to players that are just more serviceable than Brewer at this point. Philly has been a terrible team for a while but with the FO changes they've had, signing some strong free agents may be more of their goal than just meeting the salary minimum and getting a pick.

But you guys are right with more than half the teams below the minimum there just might be a chance.
