So I'm trying to make a website, but don't really have a clue where to start learning how to use html and css and stuff like that. I do know some very basic html, but I might as well start from the beginning...

Do any of you have any recommended websites or resources that will be able to help me out?

    Dreamweaver is your friend.

Google sites for tips on web design.

That should help you out a lot!

I learned a lot on my own at http://www.webmonkey.com/

They break everything down by topics that are easy to follow.

    Good luck.

I used www.htmlgoodies.com as a primer when I taught a friend of mine how to make his webpages.

^ I second that one.

First of all, be REALLY REALLY knowledgeable on what HTML is and how it's formed, and the DO's and DON'Ts of it.

For example, now what tags are used for what, and which tags are specific to some browsers, etc.

Learn the basics of hierarchy (title inside head, head above body, etc.), inline elements (paragraphs inside tables), block-level elements (divs, etc.), the Hexadecimal code (RRGGBB code for read is FF0000, etc.), the basics of CSS , and the basics of JavaScript. You don't need to know ALL OF IT, just the basics.

Mainly, you need to know how these operate within each other, so you don't get lost if you see some code on another page you would want to do on yours.

I learned with the "Beginner's Guide to HTML" from the NCSA. Google its location and Start there and learn with NOTEPAD first, then you can move to WYSIWYG editors. Then learn GOOD design by looking at BAD design.

Uh... no... stay away from WYSIWYG editors.

I had absolutely no experience and bought dreamweaver and was able to jump right in.

Here is a website I maintain www.fightingcardinals.com . I totally recommend dreamweaver. It is expensive, but has great tutorials.

GlassHalfFull, "enter this site" (or SPLASH pages) SUCK.

"Enter" ?!?!? Am I not already THERE? WTH, man. :D I wasted a CLICK. Just give the people what they want without making them click to "get in" to the site. Also, what's the deal with the gray background bars on the left and right?

Agreed. Unless there is a bad ass flash intro or something, splash pages are completely useless.

    NOT EVEN then.

GlassHalfFull, the link to "accessibleuniverse" does not lead to anything substantial, either. :( It's unprofessional, yo. I would NEVER show "website created by" unless it's a FREE or very, very-reduced-price site.

Say what day, Mariska Hargitay. :D

I am working for the ballet folklórico (the one in the Ripley House, by that church where you met my cousin) right now. Not busy.

Oh, yeah, I will, droxford... ^ those are only a few things I can say here... if he desired and felt comfortable, I would REALLY go to town on the critique (constructive, helpful, detailed commentary geared to help in improvement) and would notice a bunch more things. :)
