I posted it here because of all the hype of us wanting to get this kid. They got the pick right before us. Sucks.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Four months ago, the Detroit Pistons had two first-round picks in the NBA draft. Now they have none.

No complaints from the Pistons. They used those selections - and reserves - to acquire Rasheed Wallace, who helped them win the NBA title last week.

"It made no sense to pass on Rasheed Wallace," Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said Wednesday. "The fact that we won it all puts a stamp on it."

Dumars also feels good about dealing his first-round picks because he had two last year: Darko Milicic and Carlos Delfino.

"That was a huge factor," he said.

The Pistons got about what they expected from Milicic - which wasn't much - after they selected the 7-foot center from Serbia-Montenegro with the second overall pick last year.

Delfino, taken 25th, is expected to provide depth at small forward and shooting guard next season. The Argentine was one of the top stars in Europe this season, playing for an Italian team.

If Detroit doesn't trade into the first round Thursday - a move Dumars called an option - its only pick will be late in the second round, 54th overall.

Dumars said he would deal only for a first-round pick that could play right away - most likely as a reserve guard or small forward - or for a "special" player.

"I think we can use some depth on the perimeter," he said.

Dumars acknowledged there are two or three players for whom he would try to land a first-round choice. One could be Duke's Chris Duhon, a point guard who worked out for Detroit on Wednesday.

"He stands for everything that we stand for," Dumars said. "He's a tough kid, a tough-minded kid."

The Pistons gave up both their first-round picks Feb. 19 to get Wallace in a three-team deal. The 17th selection went to Atlanta and the 25th to Atlanta, along with backups.

Dumars hopes Wallace, an unrestricted free agent, will return to help Detroit win more championships.

While other teams would have to convince Wallace he could win a championship for them before adoring fans, Detroit doesn't.

"He lived that. He saw it," Dumars said.

The Pistons also hope to re-sign Mehmet Okur, a restricted free agent. But they don't plan to offer him more than about $5 million a year, and Dumars has heard others are willing to offer more.

"There's a reason that there are a lot of teams out there that like him," he said. "It's hard to find 7-foot guys that have that kind of skill."

The Pistons can agree to terms of a new contract with Wallace and Okur at any time, but they can't sign either until July 14 when the salary cap is set for next season.
