Sounds like this is what Manu wanted.

They're just giving him an out. This way Argentinian fans can blame "the spurs" and not Manu for not participating.

Argentina is steadily declining so what does it matter that two 33 yr or older players don't play?

Popovich has a tremendous bond with the spurs "big 3." I'm 99% certain that he and Manu discussed this before the letter was sent.

    I'm sure that's what he'll say.

Probably. But I wonder what the reaction would be if the Rockets did something similar. Suppose they will not grant permission for Harden to participate in the US national team. My guess is fans and media will vilify for treating Harden like an asset.

The Argentine national team has had a great run. I loved watching this group play together the last 8-10 years. But the generation of players led by Manu, Scola and several other NBA players is old and over-the-hill. The Golden Age is ending.

Coming off a stress fracture that wasn't even close to meeting the recommended recovery time? I'd be perfectly fine with it.

The Rockets' obligation is first and foremost to protect the success and integrity of their own team. If they can also meet obligations like international participation without jeopardizing that goal, then great. However, the professional team should always come first as they're the ones that are not only paying the salaries, but are taking the most risk should a player's injury be aggravated or if it led to a worse injury.

The Spurs invest millions in their players. They have the right to protect the health of their players.
