Can't agree more with this article.

......if Dolan really wanted to keep Lin, he could've signed him for four years and $24 million at the start of free agency. He could've kept Lin and Felton. He could've paid the reasonable $5 million salaries in Years 1 and 2 of the Houston deal, and then traded one of his expiring contracts (even Lin's) to a team looking for a near-future salary dump. Or, in the unlikely case that Lin flopped, Dolan could've cut the point guard before Year 3 and used the stretch-provision clause in the labor agreement to spread the salary-cap hit over three seasons.

"It never made sense what the Knicks did there," said an Eastern Conference executive who monitored the Lin transaction. "The league set up the restricted free-agent system to protect teams, and you never want to lose an asset for nothing when you have the right to match.

"I don't know if Lin will ever be a top-five point guard in the league," said the Eastern Conference executive, "but I could see him on the next level, from six to 10. And that's not a bad thing."

Since O'Connor, a New York writer, was sourcing that article in Philly, I can't help but wonder if that "Eastern Conference executive" was Sam Hinkie.

I think you're right. He would have the inside knowledge.

For free spending Dolan expecting Lin to give him a discount is mind-blowing.

though I still think Lin will find himself back with the Knicks in the future...

What Linsanity did to the city of New York was unbelievable.

NY has the most vindictive sports media in the country. The backlash when Lin went to the Rockets was almost as bad as Dwight leaving the Lakers. A big difference though is that Lin left on relatively good terms with the fans.

LOL at the eastern conference executive saying Lin becoming a top 6-10 PG isn't a bad thing. That would be fantastic.
Here are the top 5 PG's in no particular order
    Rose
    Russ
    Cp3
    Parker
    Curry

6-10 you may have guys like
    Deron
    Rondo
    Lawson
    Kyrie
    Conley
    Damian
    Wall
    Jrue
    Rubio

If Lin is among this 6-10 group considering his price that would be amazing

I guess NY sucks so much that they really don't have anything else to write about. Those 2 months in early 2012 was probably their only bright moment in the past decade they could brag about.

You need to remove Rose and Curry from the top 5. Rose is over rated. Bulls has a good roaster and without Rose, they were at round 2.

Curry? Yes, he is hot in shooting, but that is about it.

Funny, I've been thinking the same. It fits his story well. Hopefully Dolan won't be the owner when it happens...

I'd say Lin is on par with Lillard right now, and probably better than Rubio.
