Ann Arbor... For all the downfalls of Michigan's economy it still has one of the top public universities on the planet. That's always a bright spot I guess. Southern **** holes like Alabama don't even have that.

Are you familiar with the term white flight? Or as StupidMoniker calls it, "voluntary segregation". Maybe you should familiarize yourself with it.

It was a very nice and prosperous city 60 years ago. It was probably one of the top 3-4 cities in the USA to live in because of ample high paying jobs, lots of land and tax revenue. It is worth driving through if you get a chance. There is still plenty to do and the city is better than it was 5-10 years ago.

Having said that, it was a city that refused to diversify their economy, and when the automotive industry had to leave to compete, the city was destroyed. The reasons the automotive industry is complicated and not as simple as Democrate versus Republican. The manufacturers did not make quality products in the 70's or 80's. They gave generous pensions to their workforce but failed to set aside the money to pay the benefits that they knew would come due with an aging workforce. Layoffs led to a larger strain on social services. Thus the tax revenue was even more important. Employees contested pay cuts and companies and the high educated left which led to even less tax revenue and more unemployment. The cost of keeping the infastructure of town the size functional is staggering.

Next time do yourself a favor a read about a place before just driving. No one goes to Michigan to shop. However had you gone to Auburn Hills you would have found better than anything in Indiana.

Ann Arbor is a nice town...Auburn Hills and the areas outside of Detroit are among the wealthiest in America. Still it is still Michigan and the whole state has a shell shocked feel; you can read it on the faces of the people living there.

There are nice places in Alabama and in general the South is a nicer place than the Rust Belt and Midwest... At least the South has optimism ..... Good luck getting a smile in the Midwest.

You can make excuses for why it's not a thriving place anymore, but no one can make an excuse for why it's in the state it's in. It's ok to admit your faction has allowed this to happen. It didn't have to happen, it was allowed to happen. And you were fine with it, because you didn't want to pay for it from your pocket. That's what you decided when you looked the other way on so many things your representatives did.

Just needs investment in jobs, hospitals, entrepreneurs. That's it. It's like every other equivalently poor place in the world after midnight. You must be a giant p***y to react to these videos with fear or anger. You must be so morally desperate to not be just plain sad and talk here about what you can do to fix it. Instead, go into defense of your faction. Brilliant.

Don't be surprised if ISIS decides to find the people you neglected most and convinces them to do horrifying things for some $$$. Those guys are going to remember the individualistic excuses you made from your armchair. You're basically inviting it at this point. Take care of your people ffs. All the money you believe you earned will be pointless if this wound grows.

So, postwar suburban development and emigration will make city-dwelling Americans ultra-religiously decapitate journalists and publicly stone women for having indiscriminate sex?

I cannot decide if you live in such a repressed area of the world and were fostered under such a backwards religious dogma that you fail to understand the workings of the rest of the world... OR that you have an unhealthy jealousy of the West and the United States especially. Regardless, either way, you are very much out of touch.

Kind of a red herring, don't you think? People moved to the suburbs because that's how cities typically grow - outwards. Is migration to the south over the past 50 years white flight as well? Of course not; not every person migrating to southern states is white, nor are they necessarily American.

I'm trying to figure what would be better for the people of Detroit:

    • Quadrupling H1-B visas and giving amnesty to illegal immigrants.
    OR
    • Increasing restrictions on visa hires and implementing E-Verify.
I don't see how hiring more visa workers is going to make Detroit's public schools any better. That's one way to deal with education issues - go abroad and find educated people. Is that what you support?

In terms of economics, these children will have very little to look forward to when the supply of visa workers and economically displaced citizens and legal immigrants increases. That's not just true of people in Detroit, it is also true of people elsewhere.

Look at the crazy no-marriage-for-gays Kentucky county clerk - Democrat. People there too in those parts of Kentucky have built it into a Democratic Party Bastion. Neither there too was white flight to blame for the demise in their economic prosperity.

Doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results is the definition of insanity.

Mathloom is both a contrarian and idealist at home and abroad, the language and arguments have gotten a little more abrupt either as a byproduct of being ideologically "outnumbered" or just as a strategically more noticeable communication style.

My wife is from a tiny town in Switzerland , she thinks everyone should be home by sunset , I knew she was't feeling comfortable but I did not expect her to be over paranoid of what some parts of Michigan /ohio looks like .

Offline maps was not enough with all the winter detour/closure. I was just happy to see a healthy highway, I was't asking for much to begin with ,just a cici pizza and jcpenney but on a bright side , instead ,I had the thrill of going to Indiana zoo
