What's up with this kid? Do we still have him on the Viper's? Why isn't he on the SL team? Kid is only 22 with great height 6' 10.5" w/o shoes 7ft w/ shoes and 7' 7" wingspan. Anyone know what's going on?
Horrible attitude and body language with the Vipers...walked off the bench a couple times when he didn't get to play. Needs to grow up if he wants back in the league.
He barely got playing time on the Vipers ... that probably should answer your question. I remember watching the vipers for TJones but stayed for Whiteside; he had a very good game when I watched. then all of sudden he was gone. Had no idea he had an attitude problem.. what a shame.
I cant tell you how many people on the GARM were calling for Morey's head after he drafted Patterson over Whiteside.
His mental capacity is what it is. He's not going to get more mental capacity by maturing. Hassan has a limited supply of that and it's all he's gonna get for a lifetime. He's probably got around the same mental capacity as Javale. Javale's mental capacity isn't going to improve either. Hassan's game and his body have matured however. He's 260+ lbs. And my point about him has always been you don't have to be a high basketball iq guy to defend the paint and the rim. Hassan has something like a 9'6" standing reach. He TOWERS over most NBA centers. When I look at guys like Reggie Evans, Jordan Hill, Sam Dalembert, Festus Ezeli, Kwame Brown, and many many others there isn't enough brain cells between the bunch of them to equal one good basketball iq player. They're all guys that use their physical skills and they've used them enough to develop their reflexes to respond to NBA speed and movement to accomplish a specific task, whether that be rebounding the ball, defending the paint, or both. Hassan fits in this category of player. He's ready to be in the NBA. He should be in the NBA. I can't figure out why he's not in the NBA. If it's attitude...then apparently it must be very, very bad, because even guys with some attitude problems but his size and athleticism will get second and third chances in the NBA. When I saw Hassan at RGV play in the limited minutes he played, he was a game changer. He completely shut down the paint and dominated the boards, altering practically every shot attempt within 6 feet of the rim. I do remember one game where he was put in with about 5 minutes left...a complete blow out with the Vipers up by about 40...where he went about his minutes in a very lackadaisical manner. But they traded Summers for him, another player on the cusp of the NBA who was playing his butt off in the DL, and then they parked him on the bench, letting another player (Macklin) that is as big a lame brain as Hassan get consistent minutes. And it was obvious that Hassan was the better player. I thought we were hiding Hassan in RG until we could sign him to a minimum deal. Because of how he dominated in limited minutes there was no other reason that I could think of not to be starting him and playing him big minutes down there. Except to keep some other team from picking up on him and signing him away from RGV. This is why I am interested in knowing more about the "attitude" issues with him. And if he does have attitude issues they must be very severe. I can think of no other big man with Hassan's size and athleticism that we could possibly bring in for a minimum salary deal with possibly non-guaranteed 2nd and 3rd seasons that has more talent, size, and athleticism than Whiteside. I think he would be a great pickup to bring in to training camp and see how he performs and I can't figure out why Morey hasn't jumped on him yet. That's why I'd like to know more about his attitude issues.
Attitude problems are big with littles. A guard? Gone. A big? Give him a chance. Another chance. And another. I buy your point and would love to hear what's up with this guy, as well.
I'd say the consensus on the board was that overall people were pretty high on Marcus Morris, and lots of unknowns about Leonard. That draft was sold as a fairly weak draft by normal standards, and the Morris twins were a fairly known commodity, and a star player at his level in college. Im sure some people on here will "claim" that they were the ones that thought Morey should draft Leonard instead at 14, but the truth is nobody knew he would be this could just like NOBODY knew Parsons would be as good as he has been. Since Morey drafted Parsons AND Motiejunas in that draft, I think its safe to say he did pretty damn good that draft. -Also, I get sick and tired of hearing about how much of a "bust" Marcus Morris apparently is just because he spent his rookie season in RGV. Last season, some of the Rockets most productive lineups had Morris in it. He's going to end up having a long career in the NBA even if only as a specialist. He might not be "Carmelo with Defense" but he's going to be a solid NBA player. That's about all you can expect from the 14th pick in the draft anyways.
I hope for you that you are right because that would be waste of bandwidth.. I only say Hasheem Thabeet.... great size zero game... We will see
While Thabeet has zero game...he's still in the NBA collecting a check and likely will be for several more years..simply because of his size. Put him in the same category as the other guys I brought up. But ..... shhhhh ..... Hassan is a better player by far than Thabeet.
I think "Jerry's take" from when he was with the Kings here is pretty much the same as its always been with Hassaan- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2up_sBs6c5k There is more to being an NBA player than just being big. You do have to learn plays, and fill some type of role. For whatever reason, Hassaan just never has been able to do that. The Rockets or any other NBA team "could" decide to pick him up, but after 3 years in the league of not being able to win playing time not just in the NBA but also the D-League because of these things, its pretty evident that he's not just going to change overnight. Regardless.... why the hell are we still talking about Hassaan Whiteside again????
