Read what I wrote.... What is 3 to 5 times 35-39 million. I used the 218 million dollar number to reach 3 to 5 times the going value.... If you want to use the 400 million dollar number, you are looking at 6-10 times the value.

Again the fair market value is already adjusted.

And that would be applicable if UT were making an investment, but they made a purchase. They did not buy land to flip it later and make money off of it. They bought land to put "something there", and have been pretty open about their intent to use that land to expand in some fashion. This is not some type of investment. This is some type of campus. We don't know what type of campus it will be yet but it surely isn't an investment.

You make investments by making purchases. I don't think intent is what matters here anyway. They have not made any official orders or signed any documents for filed any permits to build anything. Purchasing and uniting 300 acres of land so close to light rail and the core of Houston is an investment if I've ever heard one.

I hear for their next investment, UT is planning on buying a B&B in Vermont for 75 million dollars.

Because they don't know "exactly" what they are building yet.

UT is open about putting some sort of campus there, and is working with others to come up with exactly what it will be. This is not an investment. It is an expansion of some sort into the Houston market, and UT has been clear on that (the expansion part).

The Mountain West has confirmed that the Big 12 asked permission and it was granted to speak with their teams.

SD State and CSU in play but unlikely imo

Most likely something to do with facilities

This is big because it keeps Tom Herman's contract buyout at 2.5MM.

They already said they intent to build a research facility.......

The 300 acres are in an area that hasn't had any luck getting much activity in 15 years...

You can split hairs all you want but the PUF system has not produced educational institutions that compares with our peers. UT Austin and TAMU @ College Station can compete, but where's the rest? UT and TAMU built underwhelming systems relative to the rest of the country.

Intent is irrelevant - buying land is an investment. They may intend to build something on it, but that doesn't change the fact that it's an investment - adding buildings just makes the land worth even more. If I buy land with an intent to build a house on it, it doesn't change the fact that my land purchase was an investment. If the campus gets rejected or 100 years from now when they don't want it, they can still sell the land.

Until they actually implement a plan to put students in Houston, they've done nothing that violates any laws. PUF can buy land as it sees fit.

It's about actions taken. They have not filed any city permits, sent out for contractor bids or anything at all that that remotely comes close to building a facility. Their intent to bulid a campus has nothing to do with the actions you take to build it. If you guys are trying to hold them to policy and the law then "but come on we know..." is not an argument to make. Is it shady? Sure. But the only action they have taken is purchasing land which and nothing says investment like purchasing parcels of land.

Reply if you want but I'm done. This debate is boring as ****.

CBS Sports and local austin radio were reporting the big 12 (UT especially) wants to wrap up expansion by the start of the season. They don't want the distraction and it'll make it more likely that the schools can join in 2017 which would be very good timing since that is when the championship game is. If the question of if you are expanding is definitely yes then it's not rocket science. The difficult part is judging adding schools vs keeping the status quo. Everything you need to know about the schools in every imaginable context is quantifiable. The only thing you need to find out are there plans for future investments. Looking at your stadiums UH and Cincinnati.

UT apparently wants to go to 12 but some northern schools want to go to 14. IMO, I don't think UH will get the votes from the north unless the big 12 brings in 3 other schools outside of Texas to water down the Texas influence in the league as oppose to strengthening it.

Here are the teams that have been a part of the discussion:

    AAC
    Cincinnati
    UH
    Connecticut
    South Florida
    Central Florida
    Memphis
    Tulane

    MOUNTAIN WEST
    Boise State
    Colorado State

    INDEPENDENT
    BYU

Some weekend rumblings. No idea how credible any of these guys are so take it for what it's worth. Tweet from UC President is interesting, could be a lot of things though.

All of this makes complete sense. I'm going to miss the round robin but maybe this means we'll get that 4th non-conference game back. It could mean UT will offer to schedule A&M. The bummer is you'll go 6-8 years before playing a team in the other division at home. I think you can split up the Texas teams in a 12 team conference but not a 14 team.

What would be the reasoning for this over just everybody in 2017?

Aren't AAC schools required to give 18 month notice to leave? That's probably it. I read that somewhere.

    It's 27 months and 10MM.

Read that it's 27 months with 10M buyout. That amount will increase with shorter notice. But if all 3 schools are willing to foot the bill, I don't really see the reasoning behind either. If ultimately going to add 4, might as well add them all at once to trigger the increased payout by ESPN.

It might be some kind of domino effect thing.

Whereas the AAC can't absorb 3 defections all at once, so they're asking the Big 12 to do it in phases.

Likely AAC replacements: UTSA, Rice, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky?
