Huh. I don't see Morey offering a huge contract to a guy like Harden. It's one thing to offer back loaded contracts taking advantage of the new CBA to up and coming players like Lin and Asik but Harden would break the bank. Doesn't fit his mold.

If Rockets can pry away James Harden from OKC..that would cut our rebuilding process in half. James Harden + top 10 pick in next years draft + Asik, Parsons, Lin and our 4 talented rookies=contender in 2 years:cool: THIS is how you rebuild!!:p

The writer only briefly mentions Houston and Dallas as having offered "monster deals" to Harden as the OP wrote. Suns are also mentioned as a possible destination as Harden's mother lives there.

I thought it was a given that Morey would at least make an offer to Presti if Harden and OKC couldn't come to an agreement.

-Also wouldn't surprise me if OKC leaked out some trade rumours to entice Harden and his agent back to the table to work out an extension.

My personal thoughts are that OKC is too close to winning a title to really try and mess with their chemistry too much at this stage. They always have the amnesty in their back pocket to use on Perkins if they want to waive him for capspace to resign Harden.

-Still I absolutely believe Morey should still put a competitive offer on the table for Harden if they cannot come to an agreement on an extension by the end of the month.

Presti can leak trade rumors all he wants. Harden and his agent can leak free agent signing rumors.

The bottom line is unless Harden is seriously injured this year or takes a significant plunge in production, effectiveness, and efficiency...he's going to get a max offer if he hits restricted free agency. He's a top 3-4 shooting guard. In a couple more seasons, he may be the first or second best shooting guard. Those guys get paid max.

The only question here is will he agree to take less than the max now to not risk losing money due to a career-ending injury?

The Thunder will amnesty Perkins before they let Harden walk away in free agency.

Here's the situation with OKC and Harden:

A max deal for Harden will give the Thunder something in the neighborhood of an $85 million payroll a year from now, when the league's more draconian luxury tax penalties kick in. Which would result in Oklahoma City cutting a check in the $25 million range to the league, depending on where next season's luxury tax level comes in (it's now at just over $70 million). That's mostly because three other players they drafted, Durant, Westbrook and Ibaka, also make in excess of $12 million a season, but also because of one mistake -- a dubious, expensive extension for center Kendrick Perkins.

There are alternatives available, perhaps. They can use their amnesty clause to waive Perkins, get down closer to $75 million in payroll, and bypass most of the tax payments. Of course, they'd still be paying Perkins $10 million to not play for them, so the roster still would be very expensive. They can trade Harden or one of their other expensive players, although they're certain to get 50 cents a dollar in return. Or they can suck it up and pay through the nose for a year or two in a quest for a title.

The new CBA had two other unpleasant surprises for the Thunder. The first -- the "Rose rule" on extensions that gives bigger ones to superstar players -- helped put them in this mess. The value of Durant's extension rose by about $4 million per season because of this rule, which puts the Thunder $4 million deeper into the tax if they extend Harden. (It also put them just over the cap last summer, preventing them from bidding on the likes of Chauncey Billups in amnesty auctions.)

Wait, there's more: The new CBA incentivizes star players to become unrestricted free agents rather than sign extensions. It used to be that the Oklahoma Citys of the world had a nice weapon at their disposal to hang on to their stars -- just keep extending them a year before the contract expired, and they'd never become free agents.

But in an unintended consequence of owners' anger over the Carmelo Anthony saga and several similar events, the new CBA only allows a short extension, which means it's no longer worth it for players to extend when they can get a long-term deal a year later.

You know who that hurts? Not L.A. and New York, that's who. Just think: Durant will be a completely unrestricted free agent in 2016, and there's nothing the Thunder can do other than hope he wants to stay. Ditto for Westbrook and Serge Ibaka in 2017. Yes, that's far down the road, but it's coming.

In the meantime, they obviously have a heck of a team, and regardless of the Harden situation they should challenge for the championship this season. But the Thunder did everything right -- hitting home runs on four straight draft picks, avoiding bad contracts and patiently building a winner. If even they can't keep a good team together in a small market, it doesn't say great things about the CBA's alleged ability to let small markets compete for championships.

Rockets were considering Howard too along with every other major player. It'd be nice to reel him in (depending on what we give up), but I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't.

I've said it before and I'll say it agin: like in Pokemon, if harden is your only move there is something wrong. Harden is one piece, but what else comes together to make that work?

Harden + Josh Smith? Harden by himself doesn't move the needle enough.

[rquoter]Yet despite the loving words flying around Chesapeake Energy Arena, the NBA is a business and not a family, and neither the Thunder's economics nor the new CBA's demands are of Harden's making. He may not boast the per-game scoring averages of Gordon, but league sources say the Mavericks, located in the fifth-biggest TV market, and the Rockets, in the 10th biggest, are already interested in offering a monster deal to Harden. Not to mention that his mother lives in Phoenix, near Harden's alma mater. The Suns might decide to carve out extra millions to bring Harden home.[/rquoter]

This is sort of like non-news to me. The Rockets seem to be interested in acquiring any really talented player that's willing to play here. Of course they would make a competitive offer for James Harden.

He's the type of talent we would be absolutely happy to get if we tanked the season.

He's only 23 y/o and has already accomplished quite a bit and will get better.

And Eric Gordon got the max and he can't ever stay healthy. Harden will definitely get it.

If OKC does not resign Harden, they are giving Durant a gift wrapped excuse to force his way out. He can play the "I just want to win" card, and join Dwight in LA just as Kobe begins to wind down.
