I had a dentist appointment this morning, and saw this on the cover of Time Magazine for March 15th. Notice the spelling of "desserts" in the upper right corner: You would think a major magazine like Time would have better editors....
You must not be in the spelling contest. "Deserts" is right, since it's derived from "deserve." As in "Martha's getting what she deserves." From m-w.com: Main Entry: 3de·sert Pronunciation: di-'z&rt Function: noun Etymology: Middle English deserte, from Old French, from feminine of desert, past participle of deservir to deserve 1 : the quality or fact of deserving reward or punishment 2 : deserved reward or punishment -- usually used in plural <got their just deserts> 3 : EXCELLENCE, WORTH Just a random fact I picked up somewhere that I felt like sharing. (It's more interesting than UConn-GT right now....)
Quit being so technical on me! I would have thought they were trying for a play on words with "desserts", because of her cooking. But nooooo, you have to go and be all "right" about it....
