Perry: No Medicaid expansion, no state health exchange

Gov. Rick Perry says Texas has “no intention” of implementing a state health insurance exchange or expanding Medicaid now that the federal health care law has been upheld.

Here’s an excerpt from his statement. His office says more will come Monday:

“If anyone was in doubt, we in Texas have no intention to implement so-called state exchanges or to expand Medicaid under Obamacare, I will not be party to socializing healthcare and bankrupting my state in direct contradiction to our Constitution and our founding principles of limited government. I stand proudly with the growing chorus of governors who reject the Obamacare power grab. Neither a “state” exchange nor the expansion of Medicaid under this program would result in better “patient protection” or in more “affordable care.” They would only make Texas a mere appendage of the federal government when it comes to health care.”

Perry is writing to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to this effect, according to his office.

The federal government is to establish a health insurance exchange if Texas doesn’t. Medicaid expansion is not required by states under the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the federal health care law.

On the thread preview from the forum layout page the thread titles reads "Rick Perry does" and then you see bigtexxx's name right under it.

So it looks like "Rick Perry does XxX"

I lol'd for a second and then I saw what the thread actually was and became disinterested.

Interesting, given that these same health care exchanges are supposedly part of what the GOP claims would be in their health care reform. By letting the feds run the Texas exchange, Perry is just giving up the state's power to the federal government.

Also a great decision on Medicaid, given that the federal government was paying for virtually all of the expansion for the next decade. Given that it would have cost the state virtually nothing, the only losers here are the Texas poor. But in bigtexxx and Rick Perry world, those people don't matter anyway.

I was surprised he knew about the Supreme Court ruling, and remembered it long enough to write a statement about it---doesn't he have a federal agency or two to forget about abolishing?

So embarrassing for a once great state.

Texas can't get rid of that clown fast enough.

Well, it's better to fight against "socialism" then it is to look at policy options. Especially since his cronies need to be paid. We can only have so many people getting support!

This is a great victory for the opposition of Socialism. Liberals are the stain of this society, and will eventually lead to the implosion of this once great Country.

Bravo Bigtexxx for continuing the fight against these idiots!

Texas is definitely a shining example of fiscal responsibility. Totally get where you're coming from Texx.

Texas law requires a balanced budget. You wouldn't understand that concept, son.

So your thinking is we should just throw this program in the mix totally ignoring the present fiscal state of things?

Apparantly, neither do Texas legistators who racked up a $27 billion deficit.

Texas is the Greece of America. Rick Perry can be proud. He can reject ALL the socialism!

No, I'm saying that the state clearly doesn't know what it is doing, and the poor are being hurt the most as a result. It's time to even the scales.

lol you're grasping at straws. They're PROJECTING a deficit that will get closed, by law.

By cutting EVERYTHING. Actually, what the Texas Legislature is doing is the definition of grapsing at straws.

It is also funny how Rick Perry made fun of California for the exact same thing; a projected defecit that had to be closed no matter what. Eat some crow.

Also, this is why BBAs don't make sense, because idiots make big fiscal holes, and can't fix them without making even bigger fiscal holes.

There won't be anything wrong from slashing $27 billion in programs, in one year, at gunpoint due to inflexible legistation.

you're talking in broad generalities and are not convincing.

Texas is not going to cut "EVERYTHING". That's absurd.

A balanced budget and no state taxes? Sounds like Texas is "winning"!
