So little talent in basketball and so much money. NBA has achieved it's goal I suppose. They've always been more interested in money than the long term health of the sport itself.

True, but NFL teams have way more players on each roster than NBA teams do, so they're actually paying their total roster a lot more money than NBA teams do.

To put this into context of old nba salary cap, this is worth the equivalent of 11.9m/yearly

Wow. If Mozgov got that, then we can kiss D-Mo goodbye. Maybe we should punt a year or even two and hang onto our capspace til the NBA comes to its senses.

yeah it's not that bad of a deal when you consider the going rate for big men in today's game.

dwight is the biggest winner in all of this, 24m/year for him seems like a steal in retrospect.

This contract is going to look even better the year after.

If the salary cap does indeed jump to 108m, this will be even better if not a slight overpay.

In 17-18, it will be worth 10.34m/year had the cap been at 70m

Just because it would be only $12 mil under the old cap doesn't mean you don't spend it wisely. You're overpaying for a guy who was 10th in the rotation during the playoffs. Mozgov is basically Hibbert 2.0 a 29 year old slow lumbering center who doesn't exactly fit the Lakers young team. Not that Whiteside would've signed with the Lakers but he would've only cost $22 mil. If you're going to pay a center why not take a chance on Biyombo?

Maybe they have faith he returns to form the year prior where he would've been worth 12m.

Not saying its fully wise of them, just giving context

if mozgov plays about 30 mpg, he might actually be worth this contract based on WS/48. his real plus-minus was absolutely horrendous this year but was very good the year before. based on my eye test, he needs to be much more like the year before to be worth this contract, which means he needs to be healthier. which is definitely a risk for a 30 year old center. seems unlikely he'll be worth it but given how overpaid centers tend to be, this probably isn't a terrible overpay. not sure how it fits into capspace plans for the lakers next year.

If Harden gets 90 mil, Durant and Lebron would get 200 mil.

The cap is not ever going down. For example, with exception of the 2 seasons Jordan made over $30 million each, he made a total of $30 for the rest of his career. Compare that to the money given out over the past 10 years.

These are the new prices for free agents.

Also remember there are only 15 players on a NBA roster. So if every player got the exact same salary for the 2017 cap space of $110 million, they would each get $7.3 million year. Yes, even that 15th man who does nothing all season but cheer would make that much.

That will never happen, so the money has to go somewhere.

Well duh NFL is mainly a national sport popular only in the US. NBA is a global sport popular across the world including Asia so other than ticket sales you also have merchandise, league pass and tv rights which are consumed by a world-wide audience. More people watch NFL domestically but given there's more people on an NFL roster than NBA rosters there's a lot more money given to NBA players since not only is the pie bigger the number of players are also smaller.

There's also the relatability factor going for the NBA, lots of people can play basketball so companies like Nike can sell gear, paraphernalia and drinks which make its way back to the NBA in some way. I don't think people buy NFL football unis in the same way they buy NBA jerseys.

Ariza coming off a career year got 8 mill per 2 seasons ago, Mozgof would of been worth half of that if he was a free agent during that time period coming of the kind of year he just had.

Mozgof for 8-10 million now would be a slight overpay, 2 years ago it would have been ridiculous for a 6 and 4 out of the roation non injured player to get 10 million. Horford, Conley and Lowry's where getting like 12 per.

We live in a world where Timofey Mozgov now makes more money than Steph Curry.

Ok Dwight definitely deserves $30Million per

NBA salaries have become so inflated. Borderline scrubs comfortably making 8 figures per year.

Oh he makes the same per year as James Harden.

That's like 15% of the cap in 18? So it'd be like paying him $10m in the basketball world we've been accustomed to. Not a great or terrible signing, assuming he produces. I just don't think it makes sense a team like the Lakers to bother with players like Moz.

I'm old here, but I wonder if this will be the league's new Jon Koncak and Jim McIlvaine contracts, stunning deals for backup centers that impacted the market greatly.
