Way too optimistic about the Rockets, if the relying on Harden and McHale's inability to make in-game adjustments continue, we will be on the outside looking in.

Da_Spark, is McFail a predictor variable in your projection model?

After last night, I don't think Rocket will makes the playoff despite all the talents the team have.

Asik - Top 5 in rebounds
Harden - Top 5 in score
Lin - Top 5 in steal (also top 15 in assist)
Parson - Play extremely well with Harden and Lin on the floor

Yes, Rockets is fighting so hard to stay in the playoff.

For what it's worth, i had us losing that game in Dallas last night. Predicted 1-1 split on that home and home series with the Mavs.

Even if you add 3-4 losses to my Rockets win-loss projection, we'd still make the playoffs given how tough that Utah schedule is.

Oh and by the way, if we do make the playoffs (barring a major meltdown *knock on wood*), i also predict that we are inevitably destined to face OKC in the 1st round. It's just the perfect storyline for the media and the NBA.

I didn't go game by game but your final records seem to be reasonable. I don't think we will pass GSW because their schedule is very favorable. As far as Utah, yes you are right they have the most difficult schedule and I see them falling off.

rockets will be lucky to be 10-10 for the rest 20 games with the way they've been coaching.

they lost to how many sub .500 teams past few weeks? WAS? DAL? SAC?

i like our players but the coach needs to be changed.

Let me ask you this, given how tough our schedule was during the 1st half of the season with all the back to backs and 4 in 5 game nights, if you do think McHale and the coaching staff is that clueless, then how the heck are we sitting in 7th seed right now?

Also factor in that we basically have a brand new roster (youngest and most inexperienced in the league) plus the fact that we acquired Harden with essentially no training camp. The whole team had to learn and adjust on the fly considering how hectic our schedule was at the start up until the middle of the season.

And just when the team was showing some chemistry and familiarity, the trade deadline and Daryl Morey threw a curve ball at McHale by trading his whole power forward rotation.

I am well aware of coach McHale's questionable rotations and in-game adjustments but honestly, the man deserves a whole lot of credit given the hand he was dealt with. Again, he had the youngest, least experienced, brand spanking new roster in the NBA and has put us in this current situation where we are 7th in the west.

Remember, most experts had us finishing in the lottery before the season started. You can't blame em. This young rebuilding franchise shouldn't even be winning this much on their first year together based on the history of the league in general.

Call me nuts and i may very well be in the minority with this, but i really do feel like Kevin McHale even deserves consideration for coach of the year when all is said and done this season.

Im not saying that mchales phil jackson or anything but I think the recent play has more to do with turnover, I think theyll figure out who's in the new rotation and build enough chemistry to finish strong heading into the playoffs

Yep. I have them keeping the 6th seed. Worst case scenario, we end up in 8th with the Lakers taking the 7th seed from us. Doesn't really matter if we're 7th or 8th because like i said, the NBA Gods would almost certainly pit us against OKC in the first round.

THE HUNTED: WARRIORS, ROCKETS & JAZZ
    March 7, 2013 · 9:48AM

    ... ...

    No. 7 — Rockets (33-29)

When general manager Daryl Morey traded away two of his solid young forwards in Patrick Patterson and Marcus Morris at the trade deadline and brought in Thomas Robinson, it was a big-picture move. Oh, his Rockets and their long-suffering fans would enjoy and benefit from the postseason experience, but the big game hunt is next summer when Houston could have cap room to sign two max-level free agents.

Having said that, the Rockets, with their fast-paced offense, the virtuoso efforts of first-time All-Star James Harden and his running point guard sidekick, Jeremy Lin, have proven to be one of the league’s most entertaining teams. But even with the youngest roster in the NBA, they’re not looking over their shoulders at the Lakers. They are 3-3 since the trade-deadline shakeup, alternately looking capable and clueless, often within the same game.

“I could care less about the Lakers,” said forward Chandler Parsons. “If we win our games, maybe the Jazz will lose and help the Lakers get in if everybody wants them in. We control out own destiny right now.

“(Kobe’s) confident in his team and I respect that. He can’t guarantee us losing games. He can’t guarantee the Jazz losing games. Those are just words to me.”

“I have no idea how far away (in the standings) they are,” said Lin. “I actually have no idea. I just think for us, I’d rather look forward, look at the seventh and sixth seed than I would the ninth … If we do a good job, we should be able to move up, and we won’t have to worry about anybody catching us.”

“We’re not at a point where we’re going to be setting these lofty five-month goals or three-month or three-week goals or whatever,” said coach Kevin McHale. “No, I’m not even thinking about the playoffs.”

The Rockets have proven throughout the season that they are capable of beating many of the best teams (OKC, New York, Memphis, Chicago, Atlanta, Brooklyn) and losing to some of the worst (New Orleans, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Washington, Toronto).

For the past three seasons, the Rockets have missed the playoffs by one spot. Last year, they coughed up the No. 8 seed to Utah by losing six in a row and seven of their final nine games. This time around, it would seem the presence of Harden should prevent a repeat, though they did drop seven straight in January.

Their schedule appears favorable with 12 of the final 20 games at home, with four sets of back-to-backs left and three of them conclude against a team working with a full night’s rest. If the race goes to the wire, the season finale will be a doozy when they face the Lakers in L.A.

    The details

    20 games remaining: 12 home, 8 road.
    (10 vs. current playoff teams)

    Back-to-backs left:

    Thursday at Warriors
    Friday at Suns

    March 29 at Grizzlies
    March 30 vs. Clippers

    April 5 at Trail Blazers
    April 6 at Nuggets

    April 14 vs. Kings
    April 15 at Suns

    Head-to-head vs. other playoff hopefuls:

    2-0 vs. Warriors
    Friday — road
    March 17 — home

    2-1 vs. Jazz
    March 20 — home

    2-1 vs. Lakers
    April 19 — road

Only thing I'd change from your prediction is that we'll probably lose to Indiana.

Most on here just dont 'get it'. They second guess and knee jerk to every game. They fail to consider how young this team is and that the players themselves will make mistakes. Sometimes it has nothng to do with coaching. They question his rotations when they have no clue what goes on at practice or what the coaching staff sees in these players. Leave it up to these posters on clutchfans and the rockets would be undefeated because after EVERY game we lose, they know what should have been done to get the win!!!

I think the coaching staff is getting these guys to over-achieve right now. They still have to figue out how to use the new pieces and where they fit in. If we lose a few games doing that, then so be it. It's part of the process. In the long run the team will be better for it and that is the point right now for this team THE LONG RUN....

Yeah that would be a challenging 4-game(Mar-24vsSAS,Mar-27vsIND,Mar-29@MEM,Mar-30vsLAC) stretch. A loss to the Pacers could possibly put us on a 4-game losing streak there. Going 12-8 instead means we finish with 45 wins..Playoff-bound.

Repped! Could not have said it any better. Some of our fellow fans want instant results and gratification and tend to forget that we're on our 1st year of rebuilding. A team this brand new, young, and inexperienced could easily be a bottom-feeder in the standings. Our team have over-achieved in historic fashion thus far and credit goes to the coaching staff as well.

Take the Hornets for example. That's a pretty talented team as well. Greivis Vasquez, Eric Gordon, Al-Farouq Aminu, Anthony Davis, Robin Lopez, Ryan Anderson, etc.. with a solid coach in Monty Williams, their current record, 21-41. 20 games below .500 and on pace to possibly have the worst record in the west.

Let me ask everyone.. Name 5 teams in the HISTORY of the NBA who were younger or as young and inexperienced and had the same success as this team record-wise on their first season together.

Utah's schedule is brutal, so Rockets should be a near lock for the Playoffs.
