Yao was recently checked up by doctors. He is progressing well, better than expected, and is now permitted to take some steps without his crutch. He is also allowed to lose his large walking boot in exchange for a smaller one.

Yao also received medical clearance to travel to Shanghai, for the December 19, 2009 home opener of the Chinese team that he now operates.

Yao's manager was asked about a possible shoulder injury, and replied that his shoulder is just feeling a bit of pain due to recent weather changes in Houston, but nothing to worry about.

Yeah, all that weight on those crutches for months will cause some soreness... I doubt it's a big deal, and should go away after he get off them.

is that the same shoulder where he had a injury but decided not to do a surgery on 2 or 3 years ago, because any operation would make him lose 20% of musle strength permenantly?

    I am concerned...

not to derail, so lets drop the subject after this, but contrary to what some members of ymm.com think, he left voluntarily due to time constraints(from his own posts)

ontopic.....having minor joint pain when the weather changes is nothing unusual....I get a slight pain in my knee when the first cold snap happens every year....its a side effect of an old injury I had years ago. It goes away after a day or so.

I seem to recall it was a torn labrum in his shoulder that Yao elected not to have surgery on two or three years ago. Based on my memory, the rehabilitation would have interfered with his Olympic participation, so he elected to put the surgery off indefinitely. No way of knowing from this article if that has anything to do with the shoulder pain being asked about, of course.

Damn, Yao has become an old man right before our very eyes.

One of these days, he'll take the court without remembering to put his teeth in first.

Nothing to worry about. That's something common for senior citizens.

been there...done that. People here get overly concerned for no reason and talk crap about those who have gone through Surgery, but down play the injury..I.E. t-mac's injury. I'm not a big tmac supporter...but just sayin..dont down-play an injury/surgery if you havent been through it..

If Yao needs to get his shoulder fixed, he should get it done right now instead of waiting till it becomes a problem in the training camp next year. He is getting paid a lot of money this year for one thing and one thing only -- to get healthy and be 100% for next year.
