Even though this report on Houston sports radio ratings covers two months, there isn’t much rhetoric associated with the lists because there isn’t much to say other than audiences are mostly down from a year ago.

Whether it’s a relative lack of interest in the NFL Draft or the Rockets’ fall from intriguing to blindingly mundane, there’s not much upbeat to say about the audience levels for the four English-language all-sports stations, one of which (KGOW) failed to draw a measurable audience in the March ratings book from Nielsen Audio.

These reports from Nielsen Audio cover the period from Jan. 28 through Feb. 24 and from Feb. 25 through March 23. It’s the last full book for the KILT (610 AM) morning show featuring the departed Nick Wright with John Lopez.

We focus, as always, on men 25-54, the key demo for sports radio, and start with the weeklong 6 a.m. to midnight (Monday through Sunday) numbers. Of the four stations, only KFNC (97.5 FM) is up from a year ago.

    Station March February March 2015

    KILT (610 AM) 2.7 (17th) 2.9 (17th) 3.3 (12th)

    KFNC (97.5 FM) 1.7 (24th) 2.0 (T22nd) 1.5 (24th)

    KBME (790 AM) 0.9 (T26th) 1.0 (27th) 2.3 (20th)

    KGOW (1560 AM) 0.0 (N/A) 0.1 (T37th) 0.0 (N/A)

In morning drive, the real eye-catcher is the degree to which the audience has nosedived for KBME (790 AM) since last year. Granted, there are so few meters in circulation that losing three or four primary listeners can really hurt a station, but under any circumstances, this is a sharp drop.

    Station March February March 2015

    KILT (610 AM) 2.6 (17th) 3.3 (T13th) 3.1 (13th)

    KFNC (97.5 FM) 2.3 (T18th) 3.1 (15th) 1.7 (21st)

    KBME (790 AM) 0.8 (29th) 1.5 (23rd) 4.2 (7th)

    KGOW (1560 AM) 0.0 (N/A) 0.1 (T38th) 0.0 (N/A)

Everyone is down from a year ago in middays (10 a.m.-3 p.m.).

    Station March February March 2015

    KILT (610 AM) 2.6 (15th) 2.7 (T15th) 4.5 (5th)

    KFNC (97.5 FM) 1.5 (23rd) 1.7 (T22nd) 1.8 (21st)

    KBME (790 AM) 0.7 (27th) 0.7 (27th) 2.3 (16th)

    KGOW (1560 AM) 0.0 (N/A) 0.1 (T37th) 0.0 (N/A)

KFNC continues to be the runner-up to KILT in afternoon drive and the only station with year-to-year growth.

    Station March February March 2015

    KILT (610 AM) 3.3 (13th) 3.3 (12th) 4.1 (8th)

    KFNC (97.5 FM) 2.6 (20th) 2.6 (19th) 1.8 (23rd)

    KBME (790 AM) 1.1 (27th) 1.1 (28th) 1.7 (25th)

    KGOW (1560 AM) 0.0 (N/A) 0.0 (T38th) 0.0 (N/A)

All four stations are down from 7 p.m. until midnight,

    Station March February March 2015

    KILT (610 AM) 2.3 (20th) 2.5 (T17th) 3.1 (14h)

    KBME (790 AM) 1.0 (T25th) 1.0 (25th) 2.6 (18th)

    KFNC (97.5 FM) 0.8 (T27th) 1.1 (24th) 1.0 (27th)

    KGOW (1560 AM) 0.0 (N/A) 0.0 (T39th) 0.0 (N/A)

Let’s now turn to show-by-show comparisons.

    Hosts/time slot/station March Feb.

    Rich Lord/Sean Pendergast/Ted Johnson (2-7 p.m., KILT) 3.5 3.3

    Nick Wright/John Lopez/Texans (6-10 a.m., KILT) 2.6 3.3

    Fred Faour/A.J. Hoffman (4-7 p.m., KFNC) 2.5 2.6

    Paul Gallant (7-11 p.m., KILT) 2.4 2.8

    Mike Meltser/Seth Payne (10 a.m.-2 p.m., KILT) 2.2 2.5

    Sean Salisbury-John Granato (noon-2 p.m., KFNC) 1.7 2.1

    John Granato-Raheel Ramzanali (10 a.m.-noon, KFNC) 1.5 1.7

    Charlie Pallilo (3-7 p.m., KBME) 1.1 1.1

    Barry Warner-Dylan Gwinn (9-10 a.m., KFNC) 1.1 1.7

    Lance Zierlein/Matt Thomas (6-10 a.m., KBME) 0.8 1.5

Turning to the general radio market, KODA (99.1 FM) remained the leader in March among persons 12-plus with a 7.2 share from 6 a.m. to midnight Monday through Sunday. Rounding out the top five were KGLK (107.5/106.9 FM) at 6.9, KMJQ (102.1 FM) at 6.6, KKBQ (92.9 GM) at 5.2 and KLTN (102.9 FM) at 4.8.

Among sports stations, for comparison purposes, KILT had a 1.5 share, KBME was at 0.7, KFNC at 0.6 and KGOW did not rate.

KGLK took over first place in morning drive among persons 12-plus at 7.4, one-tenth of a point up on KLTN. KODA led middays at 9.9 and afternoon drive at 7.0, and KMJQ regained the 7 p.m.-midnight lead with an 8.2 audience share.

In adults 18-plus, it was KODA for the week at 7.2, KGLK in morning drive at 7.4, KODA in middays at 10.0 and afternoon drive at 7.0 and KMJQ at night at 8.2.

Ending where we started with men 25-54, for comparison purposes with the sports stations, KGLK led for the week at 8.6. KLTN topped morning drive at 11.3, KGLK led middays at 9.5, afternoon drive at 7.5 and evenings at 8.7.

Radio is a struggling medium. New car technology makes it much easier for people to play streaming music, itunes, podcasts etc. combined with satellite radio, etc.

For me personally the commercials are killing me. I feel like 790 has gotten incredibly commercial heavy. It's unbearable at times.

Yeah I turn the radio off during commercials half the time now, it drives me nuts. Also, I didn't realize people actually listen to 97.5 still. Do they actually have local shows still? Or more Cowherd national bull****? (I ****ing hate that guy)

Maybe people are getting tired of the 24/7 NFL talk. How many times can you talk about the Texan's QB situation or what WR should they draft?

Looks like the Matt Thomas move may have backfired, both morning and midday plummeted for them.

Agree on the commercials. And if you listen regularly it's the same **** over and over ... i.e. 790 Low T Center, Mattress Makers, Los Cucos etc.

I find it strange that they do not have a better way to track listenership than the old fashioned listening logs. Or maybe the advertisers go more by number of streaming listeners on iheart, etc. Those might be more relevant figures.

I stopped listening to sports radio years ago, especially with the damn commercials.

At some point 790 will figure out Zierlein is killing their ratings...

I completely stopped listening to sports radio last year. Now it's either a music station or the aux cable.

The Rockets turning into trash didn't help the situation.

For a while, I would tune in on the way home if something big happened during the day. But, for example, after the Rams/Titans trade, sportsradio didn't even come to my mind after getting in the car.

I also hated the commercials, especially when AM610 and AM790 colluded to play them at the same time a couple of years ago. Not sure if they still do that.

AM790 had the best lineup at one point. Not that I miss them at all now, but my interest in that station plummeted when they canned Matt & Adam (who were the two guys that gave the Rockets serious coverage).

Might start listening on Mondays while driving home when the Texans' season begins.

Agreed. I only tune into 790 through the I ♥ Radio app.

It's all about podcasts nowadays. No one wants to listen to 10mins of conversation (if you can call it that now) and then 20 minutes of commercials.

610 is pretty bad. Having John Lopez do the morning show has to hurt their ratings I would think. He seems smart but a horrible radio personality. I love Matt Thomas on 790 but other than him, not much out there.

Thank you. 610 is seriously the worst. I honestly like Nick Wright for one reason, he switched up his talk and actually knows Baseball / Basketball.

JJ Watt and the Texans can do no wrong on that station.

Matt Thomas is my fav.... but my fav show has to be Adam Clanton and Sean Jones. They work really well together.

I feel like Charlie Pallilo is the only local sports radio guy who isn't bad. It's not even so much that he's great; it's that everyone else is very bad.

I love Matt and Lance, and I've been enjoying Adam and Sean as well. Sean has grown on me big time, he's probably the least politically correct person on the station and, I love that about him. He's honest and straight to the point.

I don't mind Charlie, but I get tired of listening to him talk at times. (Charlie definitely doesn't get tired of listening to Charlie from what I can tell)

I live in Austin but I simply can't handle the humor on sports talk. Just awful.

If I'm not going to listen to music then it has to be a podcast.

I listen to CP on 790 religiously. He talks all sports and knows his stuff although he can long and convoluted and redundant.

790 AM is a joke. Matt Thomas used to have a kick ass show with Sports RV mid-day. The move to pair him in the morning with the idiot Lance Zierlein has back fired

LZ has got to be the least knowledgeable, most obnoxious radio guy out there. Seriously this clown has no sports knowledge besides egg ball and I don't even know if what he says regarding egg ball is correct because I don't know that "sport". His NBA knowledge is elementary and his stupid fake voices are way overdone.

    Fire Lance Zierlein!
