It's a post-Super Bowl family affair on Fox
But Simpsons, American Dad lack the subtlety to be big winners

With Paul McCartney as featured entertainer, Sunday's Super Bowl halftime show promises to go off without a vulgar hitch or a wardrobe glitch. No, this year the smut comes after the Super Bowl...

    Subtlety lost
Likewise, there's nothing subtle about American Dad, which airs immediately following The Simpsons.

Dad is Stan Smith, a trigger-happy CIA agent. He has a quiet wife; a liberal, college-age daughter; a 13-year-old geek for a son; a fish who talks with a German accent (love the fish); and an extraterrestrial with an addiction to junk food (love him, too).

This is a tricky show to make in these security-conscious times, especially considering it takes anywhere from six months to a year to produce an animated show.

The show also tries to throw in pop-culture references. So when both the set-ups and the jokes seem dated, that's why.

The show has its moments, like when God calls up President Bush, then begs off the line. "Uh, that's Cheney, I gotta take it," God says.

Funny joke, even if we've heard it before.

But the humor is hit and miss, and often juvenile.

Still, it would be folly to bet against it. MacFarlane's Family Guy was rejected at first, too, and now it's scoring everywhere — on Fox, on Cartoon Network and in DVD sales.

It seems like they focus on the 30 something crowd the most, because most of the references seem to leech from the 80's genre.

Perhaps that is what they want me to believe.
