Woj:Sources: Memphis has reached agreement with JB Bickerstaff as associate head coach. Lakers were among teams pursuing him.

    We traded Bickerstaff for Bzdelik.

By the way... J.B. is a good coach. I don't know why so many here seem to hate him.

As an assistant? Sure. He's fine.

As a head coach? Last year? Nope.

You're right, but he was in a bad situation and was in over his head. Let's hope Bzdelik is a net gain defensively.

I think he can be a good coach. The behind scenes, ego managing duty was simply too much for a new head coach to manage with Harden and Howard.

In all seriousness, the Rockets defense fell off when Sampson left to coach U of H. When that happened, JB was promoted to the "defensive coordinator" role and McHale's right-hand man. JB had a season and a half, in reality, to fix that defense, but he never did. And the players were mainly the same. He couldn't connect to the players, but Sampson did (and was very effective).

Because he had an ENTIRE season to fix the team and basically just enabled the players instead of taking charge.

I don't think it was too much for him... I think his age makes him seem more like a peer to players instead of an authority figure or a wise figure who they trust to guide them.

I mean, Jason Terry is nearly 2 years older than J.B. Bickerstaff.

Your timeline is off. Sampson left before the series with the Blazers. J.B. was in charge of the defense last season and they finished 6th in the league in defensive rating. They were one of the best defensive teams in the league last season.
