On April 11, 2011, the Houston Rockets signed free agent Marcus Cousin (NOT DeMarcus Cousins). In order to make room for Cousin, the team had to waive a guy. The victim of that waiver was DeMarre Carroll. By the end of his 2nd NBA season, Carroll had already been traded by 1 team (Memphis) and waived by another.

4 years and 3 teams later, ESPN's Kevin Arnovitz says that league sources told him Carroll is projected to receive offers of about $50M over 4 years as a free agent.

Sounds like a lot of money, but with the new cap numbers who knows? Such a weird story, too. I wonder if any player has been through 4 teams (in 6 seasons) while never making $3M or so a year before signing a $50M contract.

Never thought he would become a serviceable player

Carroll is a product of the ATL system.

What a turnaround. He was one the scrubbiest players I've ever seen, and now he's become this. Very impressive.

He has grown by leaps and bounds. I think Whiteside fits this scenario as well; can't recall him ever getting paid

I'm just glad we're not the team offering him 50 million dollars.

I think it's no coincidence and to Morey and his staff's credit that all of these guys that seemingly come out of nowhere are connected to the Rockets. Demarre Carroll, Hassan Whiteside, Jeremy Lin, etc. The Rockets at least saw some potential when very few other teams did. Sure, the Rockets let them go. But most teams never even had the vision to sign them in the first place.

Ever heard of Lance Stephenson? Thrived in Indy and got a ridic contract.

Well. there's Carroll. That money will not be well spent. He's a great role player, but athletically, um, no.

In other words, we'd lose him anyway because he's not worth $50M.

I don't think we would see the same player if he played on this team instead of Atlanta

He wasn't garbage, he was pretty decent when he was given the chance, which was once in a blue moon. Same goes with Jordan Hamilton, he is solid, just needs to be given a chance

Been a fan sense he was a undersize PF at Mizzou leading the press. He always played with high energy and intensity. Nobody thought he was gonna become the defensive SF he is today.
