He was the 8th pick in the 2007 draft. Had shoulder injuries which forced him to miss much of his 2nd season and forced him to sit out all of the 2009-2010 season. Was traded the following year, and is now a steady bench player for the Dallas Mavericks. He hasn't quite ended up like other #8 picks, like say Rudy Gay, but he hasn't been a complete bust given his injuries and his per minute numbers. Per 36 for his career he has averaged 15.4 PPG and 8.2 TRB with a PER of 18.7. This year he has a PER of 21.1, a defensive rating of 98, offensive rating of 123, and is shooting 62% from the field. Dallas has a team option on his $900,000 contract for next season. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/wrighbr03.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandan_Wright
He's pretty much the definition of a role player. You put him in a role that fits his game and he'll produce. You ask him to do too much and he'll suck. His advanced stats have always been good, but he's really limited at what he does well, so his PER can be rather deceiving, if you look at it the wrong way. The Mavs do a good job of putting him in situations where he can be successful and his weaknesses don't get exposed. That the difference between crappy teams like the Warriors and good teams like the Mavs. The good teams/coaches see what you can do, whereas the bad teams only see what you can't do.
So...what your saying is, morey should give him the starting position and sign him to a multiple year MLE contract? Hoping he would develop into a really good starter?
Crazy how the Warriors traded Jason Richardson for him (at the time, a 20 PPG scorer) and gave up on him so easily.
