Obama has been running rings around Putin and you and the other wingnuts are too ****ing stupid to realize it. Russia is imploding and Putin is going down in Russian history as the guy who lost Cuba.

    Advantage Obama

I've been calling for this move for years, that President Obama should restore diplomatic relations with Cuba, a step that would further cement his legacy as President of the United States. Heck, I was calling for it when Bush was president. It's far past time to have diplomatic relations with Cuba. Absurdly far past time. Now we can start thinking about a vacation there in the not too distant future. At last. Thank you, Mr. President!

Republicans really need to learn to pick their battles. This is another fight they can't win. Way past due.

The quickest way to "Westernize" or "modernize" or whateverize Cuba is through trade & cultural exchange. This is long overdue.

How many Cubans did Batistusta-ist kill?

Castro led a popular rebellion against a fascist tyrant, he could have been co-opted to US interest if the big money and mafia hadn't influenced US policy.

"I believe that there is no country in the world including any and all the countries under colonial domination, where economic colonization, humiliation and exploitation were worse than in Cuba, in part owing to my country’s policies during the Batista regime. I approved the proclamation which Fidel Castro made in the Sierra Maestra, when he justifiably called for justice and especially yearned to rid Cuba of corruption. I will even go further: to some extent it is as though Batista was the incarnation of a number of sins on the part of the United States. Now we shall have to pay for those sins. In the matter of the Batista regime, I am in agreement with the first Cuban revolutionaries. That is perfectly clear."
    — U.S. President John F. Kennedy, interview with Jean Daniel, 24 October 1963

The Right Wing Oligarchs screwed the pooch so many times in the 50's and 60's it's hard to imagine/

Trying to understand the point you are making. Is this some attempt to justify the Castro Regimes behavior?

Castros are brutal tyrants with one of the worst human rights records on the planet.

This deal makes the Castros richer and more powerful, and gives them the resources necessary to ensure a succession to continue their tyranny.

Look at China. Trade has enriched and entrenched the ruling regime. Human rights are no better there now than before.

We should be trying to choke off the Castros' revenue stream (oil money from Russia/Venezuela), not pouring American dollars into their pockets.

There are many brutal regimes in Africa with worse records - whom we are friends with.

We've been trying the "starve them of resources" strategy for decades and it has failed miserably. They've had no issues maintaining power. The only people getting hurt are their people.

China's human rights record, while not good at all, is far better than it was 30 years ago. Their people are also far better off, their government has moved towards all sorts of additional freedoms (local elections, liberalized economy, etc).

Interesting that you're now pro-regulation and opposed to Americans having the freedom to spend their money however they want. Why do you want government dictating your pocketbook? Why not let the free market enter Cuba and solve all its problems? Seems very unlibertarian of you.

I'd also be curious why Commodore so strongly supports Bitcoin so that governments can't control how we use our money, but at the same time, wants the US Government to try to control how we use our money in regards to Cuba. It seems like his dream currency is completely at odds with his policy preferences.
