I thought it would be interesting to see how well Yao did compared to other international players in his 1st season. Keep in mind that some where older and some might have been the teams #1 option (Pau Gasol).

    Arvydas Sabonis (31 years old)
    PPG-14.5
    RPG-8.10
    APG-1.8
    BPG-1.07
    SPG-.88
    FG%-.545
    MPG-23.8
    G-73

    Vlade Divac (21 years old)
    PPG-8.5

    MPG-19.6
    G-82

    Andrei Kirilenko (20 years old)
    PPG-10.7
    RPG-4.90
    APG-1.1
    BPG-1.94
    SPG-1.41

    Pau Gasol (21 years old)

I found it strange that Gasol got 2.7 assists a game, and I also found it great that Yao's assist numbers are almost identical to Sabonis'.

    What about Illgauskas?

    Zydrunas Ilgauskas (24 years old)
    PPG-13.9
    RPG-8.80
    APG-.9
    BPG-1.65
    SPG-.63
    FG%-.518
    MPG-29.0
    G-82

It is too bad that Ilgauskas(wow what a name) got hurt. He was really a great player, he would be the best center in the game after Shaq if he never got hurt. Anyway sydmill what do you mean Yao's year was nothing special? All those players are doing very well now in the NBA, most where or will be All-Stars.

Why compare his stats with that of small forwards? It's interesting to look at vs. Vlade, Sabonis, Ilgauskas, etc., but even still when you say "international," all those other guys played in Euro leagues, not in China.

    I don't really see a correlation.

We are probbly comparing apples against oranges here. Firstly, some of the players are playing different positions. Secondly, there were no zone defence in prior years. Thirdly, the calibre of opponents were different. All in all, it makes it difficult to come to a reasonable conclusion.

    :)
