First. I am a big Jeremy Lin fan. Why? Because I liked the underdog story. And I thought that the fact Lin overcame a lot of racial tension and was a harvard grad meant that he had mental toughness, and a high IQ. So basically... I thought he had a lot of POTENTIAL. So Lin was our starting PG. And he has gotten better each year. But he hasn't gotten THAT MUCH better. And honestly, its kind of bugging me. Because I was so convinced that he would have improved more by now. Now, Patrick Beverley is the starter. And Lin fans are upset because they feel Lin is the better player. Well, the truth is that Lin and Beverley are pretty similar. They are both cogs in the machine. No team is really staying awake at nights planning how to stop Jeremy Lin in the finals. Same thing with Beverley. Which brings me to my point. No one ever talks about the fact that Beverley isn't just Lin's equal. But what about his potential? I mean, the reason people like Lin so much is because of his hyped potential. But what about Bev? He's about the same age as Lin. He has limited NBA experience too. With good coaching and an opportunity how good can he become? Maybe the problem isn't really that Lin isn't that good. It's just that Beverley is actually a really good point guard. After all, Beverley's numbers are depressed by Harden's usage rate and McHale's coaching just as much as Lin's. How good would Bev be if he played for a PG friendly coach like D'antoni?

Do you really think that A) last year's team would have made the playoffs last year with Bev as a starter and Lin not on the team? B) Bev has the potential to average 17 and 6 for half a season? Bev is not the better player, just the better fit.
Are you referring to me? I just don't think Bev has that kind of offensive potential and that's what this thread is about. Lin's ceiling OFFENSIVELY is way higher - Bev's DEFENSIVELY is way higher. The team needed Lin last year (3rd in win shares) this year the dynamic has changed significantly and the starters don't need his scoring punch - just Bev's defensive punch and secure ball handling. Pretty simple.
