Zach Lowe: Terrence Jones could be asking for $15M per year

Title pretty much sums it up. Found this pretty shocking myself.

Terrence Jones and Donatas Motiejunas: These might be the two most intriguing players of this whole lot. Jones has barely logged 3,000 minutes over three seasons, but he has the potential to be the most versatile non–Anthony Davis two-way player from this draft class — especially if that languid 3-point stroke morphs into a reliable weapon. Would it be insane for Jones to hold out for at least $15 million per season? Probably not, even though he would likely be the least accomplished player ever to sign an extension that pricey. Would it even be insane for Houston GM Daryl Morey to accept that kind of deal? No one really knows, but Jones’s team will begin extension talks at an eye-popping number.

Motiejunas hasn’t played much more than Jones, but he emerged last season as a legit post-up hub — a pivoting blur of cruel pump fakes and flippy hooks capable of slipping nifty passes around double-teams. He started hitting 3s from outside the corners, improved his defense, and survived at center during Dwight Howard’s absence.

I’d bet slightly against either getting an extension from Houston. Morey will take a killer deal if it falls into his lap, but he knows restricted free agency is a cudgel, and he prizes flexibility. If he gets wind that a star can be had next summer, he needs to be able to act immediately. He could extend one or both of these guys and still do that, provided he gets them on tradable contracts, but the job is easier if they’re on the books as cheap cap holds Morey could make disappear in an instant.

Well, that should mean they have a high trade value on their rookie contracts. That's the only reasonable thing to do.

If they have good seasons both D-Mo and Jones are 15m+.

Mark Cuban will sign him up to form the Parsons-T Jones-Wes Matthews superteam.

Can Morey just extend them now?

    Motiejunas 7m/yr
    Jones 8m/yr

I have no idea how NBA players are valued anymore.

It's insane to me that either Jones or DMO could make 2X what Ariza does.

At this point I'd think the Rockets would be lucky to retain either on a 3yr/36M type deal.

Per 36 minutes TJones averages 15.6 points and 8.9 rebounds. DMo averaged 15.1 and 7.4. TJones is 23 yrs old and DMo is 24 yrs old. Both players still have upside in my opinion.

These guys are going to get paid big time. The money is going to be flowing next summer. If Jones and DMo have injury free seasons this coming year, then I wouldn't be surprised if they asked for 15 million.

The potential goodnews to take from this about Jones is that he thinks he's worth $15MM a year and is going to come out this season to prove he can command that salary. Maybe he never proves he's worth that much but if he plays you would expect a 8-12MM player to perform (contributing the entire season, not just in brief flashes), that's still a giant improvement. The kind of improvement that if DMo does the same, can deliver a title.

What Jones is asking for isn't important, it's what he's prepared to do on court to prove he can be that kind of player. Here's to hoping he can make that happen and help us party like we haven't in 20+ years.

Not surprising TBH. Is $15M his max?

Everyone is a max player now days. $15M is the new $8M. Get used to it.

Exactly. Just look at some of the contracts given out in the last month. And that's without the huge increase in the salary cap that's coming next summer.
