IMHO a classic song that never got out to an audience -- I doubt some of the members of CFNET who are fans of The Cult have ever even heard the song. I've just rediscovered it after 20+ years -- it might be the best song on the album.

Classic is an acquired status requiring popularity, significance or timelessness.

I had a discussion with some folks on Reddit about what would be considered "classic" from today, 50 years from now, like The Beatles or Led Zeppelin. I contend that nothing will be considered classic because information has become so cheap. In the days of classic rock, we only got maybe 100 albums total a year to listen to. When you acquired one, you had to spend a half day's pay on it, so when you owned it, you wore that sucker out, it grew on you till you loved it.

Now there are a 100 CD's a week, you'd never have time to listen to most of them, much less grow familiar with them. Add to that the fact that they are cumlative, adding thousands every year on top of the thousands that already exist. Much like the NSA, the sheer volume of information available renders any individual piece of information insignificant because time is finite.
