I think we can sum everything up as

The Rockets can add one significant piece in the offseason assuming one wants to come here.

I expect nothing less than optimal cap management from the Rockets brass in terms of maximizing talent while creating capspace for whichever player they go after. I'm just a lot less certain that someone would want to come here. Someone like Asik is probably most realistic use of our capspace. DWill's not coming unless we get Dwight Howard. Gordon and other RFA are almost certainly going to be matched by their original teams.

You don't do much looking at trades. One possibility is the 1-year rental on Dwight Howard, using that $8m in cap-space to absorb some of Orlando's excess payroll and sending less back.

Also possible is trading for a guy with a big multi-year contract from a team that wants to blow it all up. I could see Boston doing that and needing a place to send Paul Pierce. Or, if Deron Williams leaves New Jersey, they may want to ship out Gerald Wallace. Etc.

Correct, I did not look much into trades in making this thread. I intended to focus on free agency and look at what the Rockets can do in free agency under some "baseline scenarios" without a big trade first.

I agree that the Rockets will consider many trade options before the July free agency period trades (Morey isn't gonna hang up the phone if Otis Smith calls him tomorrow about trading Dwight Howard and there will likely be activity on draft night), but the value of any trade, in particular one that has the Rockets take on or shedding significant salary, should be evaluated against what the team can do by "staying up" for the moment.

As I said, here's a link to the google doc spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AulVXh2tq1pDdFdLVngtRmhFQ3diQTNvVXFEWDM5U1E#gid=0 Please feel free to play around with the math involved in hypthetical trades.

Kris Humphries? Well, at least we'll have our pick again next year.

As I said, I just used him as an example of what a "straight forward" free agency scenario would look like since his salary range is right about where the Rockets expected cap room would be ($8.16 million) if they just waive Dalembert and didn't make any other significant moves.

Beyond this, I am not sure why people don't like him. He is an athletic big guy who rebounds at an elite level, plays hard on defense and can finish around the rim effectively and even hit some jumpers. He is kind of what we all wish Patterson would be.

The Nets were much better with him on the court this year (+16 on/off court).

    this should help.
as far as free agents go, i have a feeling a bunch of them are going to get overpaid because out of the good players, many of them are old, a ton are young and restricted so i see teams going crazy throwing out massive offer sheets without regard to future implications and the fact that there are soo many teams with ample cap room and their amnesty still available. I believe its imperative we draft well, or do some blockbuster trades because we know morey doesnt offer big contracts to players just to outbid someone else. I hope hes got the new ipad ready and the rowdies ready with gps directions to his first free agent target. We are going to need all the luck we can get.

Hate to say it .... But Im not thrilled with any of the "scenario's"

    I. The Simple Case: Kris Humphries ..... ho hum. Lateral move?

II. The One and Only Deron Williams .... Is Williams really worth that expense when Lowry and or Dragic are maybe a notch below ?

III. Restricted FA: Eric Gordon .... Loads of potential but can he stay on the court ?! Does NO match ?!

(Neither II or III these solve the Rockets problems in the paint.)

IV: The "Gilbert Arenas Free Agent-- Omer Asik .... Probably the option I prefer since it gives them a pait presence but .... he's somewhat lacking offensively.

Not knocking your efforts in the least , and they are probably the most realistic .... Just that none of them solve "all the Rockets problems".

That's kind of the issue with this free agent class. It was supposed to have CP and Dwight Howard, but both of them signed extensions. So, now we are left with Deron Williams and either restricted FAs (the best of whom are probably Gordon and Hibbert) or guys who are near the max level (Humphries).

The facts are what they are. I just wanted to put some color to what the options are, whether the options are great or or not.

I agree I think logic tell us we trade martin...and we go after asik.

then at least test the waters on eric gordon.

This of course would be the back up plan to tradeing for dwight and then signing d will outright.

I'd be hesitant to give him that much .... 13.8/11 on a NJN team thats downright horrible. His numbers could be inflated due to playing on such a poor team.

Dwight ..... herniated disk ? He may never be the same player. I'd rather not trade for him at this point .... if the option was there at the trade deadline and he has shown full recovery , I'd do it then. Not before.

Where is brooke lopez in all of this? He's a skilled 7 fter 24 yrs old. When the nets lose williams, what would they take for lopez who is rfa I think. Or just what would they take via trade? Lowry and martin for lopez and a future pick? Resign dragic, bring over d-mo, make a run at howard the following yr.

Whatever happened to us bringing over this guy?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lior_Eliyahu

also on potential free agents i would pursue OJ Mayo? Nick Young has done well for the clippers.. he might be someone worth looking into..

Carl...this is a great thread. I can appreciate stuff like this...Thanks.

I'm going to pass on Deron Williams if we have Goran and Kyle back. We need a decent big man more than a guard.

Id be OK passing on D-Will if I can keep one or the other (preferably Dragic) and upgrade elsewhere (Like the PF spot , I need a rebounder / defender there).

Thanks for bringing to light in a very organized, thought out presentation the free agency scenarios.

(Where we haul in the great Kris Humphries. But thats the landscape out there)

Looking at that free agent list, the talent + upgrade + long term upside options are not great. Its either Eric Gordon & Brook Lopez, possibly Asik.
Then its the median good player + signable range options Kris Humphries & Carl Landry. Maybe a cheap sign like Spencer Hawes.
Then some older vets with little tread on the tires like Kevin Garnett.

But if its about Leandro Barbosa, Raymond Felton, Keyon Dooling or Goran Dragic, yeah it'd be good to retain Dragic even with Lowry. Bye bye Dally Bear in almost any circumstance.

I don't think Asik gets $9-10 mil. For all his advanced numbers, he hast played near the minutes of guys like DeAndre Jordan and Kendrick Perkins did before they got their big man contracts. That'd almost be "Jim McIlvane" risk. Maybe they figure Derrick Rose wont come back any time soon so they wont be a contender off the bat to keep Asik around for.
