This could have some pretty big ramifications ... http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/11328442/judge-rules-ncaa-ed-obannon-antitrust-case
Will this eventually lead to a free-for-all where schools compete for recruits based on how much royalty money they can generate?
Yes in football (because you only know most of the players through the team) and no for basketball (because theyre all highly touted out of HS)
Ding song the amateurism farce is dead. Good riddance. I wonder if the players prefer cash or a swaggy locker room
Another one: Could alumni purchase guarantees (effectively) allow universities to promise specific salaries for athletes? Will guaranteed money become the #1 recruiting tool for big 5 conference schools and turn the whole thing into an unrestricted free agent market with no salary cap? Will ESPN start telling everyone how much each football or basketball player makes? Sham Sports would have to add a college basketball section. LOL! While it doesn't seem like the judge's lengthy write-up has been digested by everyone yet, the $5,000/yr cap seems artificial and temporary. Appeals and subsequent lawsuits might strip that away and then we can get an idea where this is headed. The train is just leaving the station.
This is like the Scarface plot. The NCAA are just pushing their faces in coke now trying to avoid the inevitable result of greed.
They're just going to appeal, and it will take years more, and eventually the Supremes will rule on it somehow, and by that time, more than likely the NCAA will have come up with some other solution anyway.
Seems to be the most likely scenario. This also causes all sorts of conflict with Title IX it would seem as well, according to ESPN. It's a whole lot of money being dumped into men's athletics that would not be going to women's athletics.
I wonder how much people like Manziel and Tebow could have earned while in college. So many people profited off their image and chances are they will never reach that level of marketability again.
I agree. They'll just keep throwing them a bone or two to shut them up. The players have more power than they realize. The problem is most of these guys don't want to relinquish the chance to enjoy the college experience and being the big man on campus because these high school kids have other avenues to travel like going to the D-League and or going over seas... And until more of them start doing that and hurting these colleges bottom line _ the NCAA will not bow down.
