'The Dark Tower' film announced for 2017 Thursday Sony Pictures released dates for 16 film in coming in the next years, including a January 13, 2017 date for "The Dark Tower." Stephen King's series of seven novel about gunslinger Roland Deschain in search of a dark tower that he hopes will save his world started in 1982 with "The Gunslinger" and concluded in 2012 with "The Wind Through the Keyhole." There is also a prequel comic book series and interactive video game that expand the universe of the books. The series incorporates several genres of fiction including fantasy, science fiction, horror and western. The new film is reported to be based on the first novel and to be helmed by Nikolaj Arcel, though no actors have been announced for the project yet. In April Sony said that they were teaming with MRC to co-finance the project, which Sony would distribute. In a statement at the time King said, "I'm excited that The Dark Tower is finally going to appear on the screen. Those who have traveled with Roland and his friends in their search for the Dark Tower are going to have their long-held hopes fully realized. This is a brilliant and creative approach to my books." With the project now seeming to be moving forward, fans can speculate who should be cast as for the movie.
One of my favourite book series, hope this movie will be good. Really have to read the books again, now that I think of it.
This was King's opus. Just an amazing series. Unfortunately, giving the history of King's film adaptations, I'm not optimistic.
And The Shining and Stand by Me. But as someone who loved the series I don't know if this will adapt well to the big screen even as a trilogy or more. And then how do you handle the flashbacks for example Wizard and Glass, my favorite of the series was almost 95% a story of Roland's youth. The Talisman if they did it right would make an epic movie.
I actually liked the first book and planned to read the the series, but found them to get worse as they went on. I gave up in the middle of the third or fourth.
I'll believe it when I'm in the theater, the previews have ended, and I read on the screen, "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."
He rushed through the final books too quickly after he was hit by the car and worried about his mortality (I thought). My favorites are Wizard in Glass and then Wind Through the Keyhole. I hope he continues to go back and give us stories about Roland's early days...
great series and the first book does start a bit dry. And yes, in typical King fashion - his payoff isn't quite equal to the buildup - but it's a very good read. Always thought of Clint Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns as Roland. At the time - King said it was the hardest series for him to write.
Getting an all-star cast.... Idris Elba & Matthew McConaughey Confirmed Coming off her role as one of the "Five Wives" in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, Aussie actress and model Abbey Lee has apparently been offered the female lead role of Tirana in Sony Pictures and MRC's adaptation of the first novel in Stephen King's The Dark Tower saga. The trades report that Idris Elba is also officially on board as The Gunslinger himself, Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey will play the villainous Man in Black. Tirana is not a major character in King's novels, so we can probably expect some pretty big changes to the plot if she's been upgraded to female lead. Nikolaj Arcel will direct The Dark Tower, which is currently set to bow on Jan. 13, 2017.
