Tunisia: 8 killed in attack on museum in capital

(CNN)Two men dressed in military garb went into a museum in Tunisia's capital Wednesday and opened fire, killing eight people and taking hostages, authorities said.

Ambulances removed people from the Bardo Museum in Tunis as helicopters flew overhead, journalist Yasmine Ryan told CNN from the scene. Some gunfire could be heard, and video showed men and women running away for safety.

Mohamed Ali Aroui, an Interior Ministry spokesman who detailed the deaths at the Tunisian museum, called the attackers Islamists in remarks on national radio. The Interior Ministry said there was a hostage situation.

While Tunisia hasn't had the same level of violence as other nations in the region that were part of the Arab Spring uprising, like neighboring Libya, it hasn't been immune to it either.

Interesting that you get annoyed with an article being posted about senseless murders - rather than with the murders themselves.

You CLEARLY do not get it.

In other words: You do NOT get it.

No, here is what I get- your selective outrage at everything Muslim. And how do you know I didn't get upset after reading about it this morning- what are you, a ****ing mind reader? Your first post was great- which is what I like about ClutchFans- sometimes I miss things on the news sites and CF posters include things here that I am very appreciative of.

Then, you have to follow that up with your condescending, didactic 2nd post- you know what, maybe everyone happened to be busy today - or better yet, maybe no one wants to post to your threads b/c they are sick of your ****. Ever think of that? That was my whole repetitive point- we certainly DO get that the day you post anything other than your obsession with Islam will be the first.

Because every single poster on here, including those who agree with you, see you for what you are- a man with a monomaniacal agenda who is not converting anyone to his mindset any time soon, so have fun with your daily posting of all that is anti-Muslim, shouting in the proverbial ****ing wilderness where- well, at least you can hear yourself. Which is really your goal,anyway- it's not to invite open discussion- it is simply to try desperately to convert. It's so obvious that they need a new name for obvious to describe it.

We have someone in our family like this on Facebook, and after the first 100, no one listens anymore.

You should change your user name from Around the World to Around the Microcosm- much more accurate.

Was this another case of "VIOLENT EXTREMISM"?

This was a case of bad people doing bad things.

I mean, I don't know much about those living in those regions- all I can tell you is that my two best friends are from Iran- they've been in America since 1979 (got out before they would have been forced to go into the military under the Ayatollah), and they're followers of Islam, one more than the other. The one who is more into it? Yes, I tend to disagree with him more than the other- mainly because, although he is very respectful of women, he still harbors this idea that men are a bit more superior- so I have to tell him he's full of **** every once in a while. The other is much more- well, you'd probably say Americanized- but he says these fanatics and terrorists are full of it and that basically they bastardize the religion.

But, what are you going to do? It's not like we're going to eradicate an entire religion- and I've been to the mosque in Lubbock twice- didn't seem that bad to me in talking to some of them about Islam (of course, this was in the mid-2000s).

I think you call a terrorist a terrorist. A Muslim terrorist is just as bad as a Christian terrorist, an Abortion terrorist, and a War-on-Christmas terrorist- depending on what they do. I think you look at each situation the same- if a bad person does a bad thing, you punish them whether they do it in the name of Allah or the name of Valhalla (cue the obligatory Zeppelin reference):

BTW, I do get the anger. These things piss me off to no end. But any act of violence pisses me off- whether done for religious or other reasons. Would the world be better off without religion altogether? Maybe. I went to Catholic school for 8 years and church for twice that long- completely ingrained in me. Some days I just don't know what to think about it.

Does anyone really believe Islam is "the religion of peace"?

Yes, dandorotik - and he likes to get really verbose about it.

Well, actually, he just likes to play holier-than-thou and tries really hard to endear himself to certain segments of this bbs because he thinks it might make him popular.

How ironic- the one who judges CF fans in the 2nd post in this thread calls me holier-than-thou. That's rich. Nice try, ATM.

I believe Islam is a religion, nothing more. But, again, you're a ****ing monomaniacal Islam fear-mongerer, so I wouldn't expect anything different.

Here's the difference between our one-word CF legacies:

dandorotik- resumes (or maybe music, or Breaking Bad)

    AroundTheWorld- Islam-hater.

    Ich gewinne.

You put yourself out there and thought it would make you popular. And you still aren't.

    Deal with it.

Just stick to CV advice, you are better at that.

Actually, because I've worked with several people on this BBS who are now my clients, and because I use my actual first and last name as my user name, being outspoken against you runs the risk of backfiring. But frankly, it doesn't matter when I deal with fools like you. I don't care about being popular; you, however, certainly care about being a dick- otherwise, why would you try so hard?

Yes, because to be popular on a message board is certainly something one would aspire to, according to ATM. I'm respected and you're a parody, so you can chew on that, sir.

So, kid, when you are done patting yourself on the back and wasting everyone's time by making this thread about me (actually, you are trying really hard to make it about you) - do you have ANY on-topic comment at all about what happened in Tunisia (which was and is actually front page headline news all over Europe, as Tunisia is a popular holiday destination)? Because you have not made one comment yet about what happened in Tunisia. Does that have to do with the fact that you would have an extremely hard time pointing out Tunisia on a map?

So, when that dandorotik kid is done with his fake outrage, here is a relevant article with some information about what happened in Tunisia.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...success-story-suffers-from-islamist-violence/

Why Tunisia, the Arab Spring’s sole success story, suffers from Islamist violence

At least 19 people were killed after two gunmen stormed one of Tunisia's most celebrated museums on Wednesday. No group asserted responsibility for the assault in Tunis, though suspicion fell immediately on Islamist militants.

Seventeen of the dead are thought to be tourists, mostly European nationals. It's a huge blow for a country whose economy relies greatly on visitors flocking to its Mediterranean beaches and ancient ruins. "This is a cowardly act to undermine our economy and a vital sector contributing to it," Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid said.

The attack, one of the worst in Tunisia's history, highlights the violence that has flared in the country, even as its fledgling democracy has been hailed as the sole remaining success story of the 2011 Arab uprisings.

    Rising militancy

The attack on the Bardo National Museum comes amid rising concerns of Islamist militancy in this tiny North African country, which is predominantly Muslim but was ruled for decades by staunch secularists. Since the fall of entrenched autocrat Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, an event that kick-started pro-democracy movements elsewhere in the Arab world, Islamist extremists have found more adherents in Tunisia — although they remain a small minority. Sluggish economic growth and high unemployment among youths, which spurred the protests against Ben Ali, have remained significant problems.

Ansar al-Sharia, a Salafist extremist group linked to al-Qaeda, has gained strength, appealing largely to poor, disenfranchised Tunisian youths. The organization is suspected to be behind a spate of assassinations and terror attacks, including an assault on the U.S. Embassy in 2012. A prominent commander affiliated with the group was slain last week in Libya while fighting alongside a faction allied to the Islamic State militant organization.

As The Washington Post has documented, Tunisians were among the largest groups of foreign fighters who journeyed to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State. The government reportedly arrested some 1,500 militants last year.

    Turbulent politics

Tunisian officials acknowledge that they woke up late to the threat posed by Ansar al-Sharia, which was declared a terrorist group only in 2013. Critics accused the then-governing Ennahda party, a moderate Islamist organization somewhat akin to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, of not taking the militant threat seriously enough.

Things changed after the assassinations of two prominent leftist politicians by Islamist extremists. Anti-Islamist protests rocked Tunis, and a staunchly secularist party with ties to the old regime won the country's first free and fair elections at the end of last year.

In the years after Ben Ali's departure, Tunisia struggled to build a stable and inclusive political system. Deep divisions between secularists and Islamists led to a political crisis in 2013 that forced Ennahda to step down. But civil society groups promoted a "national dialogue" that resulted in the elections last year and the passage of a new constitution, the most liberal in the Arab world.

    Secularists vs. Islamists

Tunisia's preeminent post-independence leader and Ben Ali's predecessor, Habib Bourguiba, left his mark with secularist laws and anti-Islamist initiatives. He ridiculed the female practice of wearing a hijab and once famously drank orange juice during a Ramadan telecast. He also presided over the arrests of thousands of Islamist dissidents.

After the 2011 uprising, Tunisia's Islamists came out of the cold. Leading politicians ended decades in exile, while a variety of Islamist organizations were for the first time able to conduct their activities in the open.

This led to friction. In 2012, Salafist rioters, incensed by a supposedly blasphemous art exhibition, went on a rampage and attacked government offices. In the same year, a leading TV network chief had his house firebombed and was charged in court with "violating public morals" after airing an animated film.

The backlash against the Islamists intensified after the killing of Chokri Belaid, a popular leftist leader, in 2013. A secularist party came in first in legislative elections in October 2014, and one of its members won the presidency.

There are reasons to be optimistic about Tunisia's future, even in the aftermath of Wednesday's terror attack. Ennahda remains a significant force in opposition — a far cry from Egypt, another Arab Spring nation, where the Muslim Brotherhood government was thrown out by the military, and its leaders and thousands of activists were put in jail. Tunisia has strong civil society organizations, unlike most of its neighbors.

Ennahda issued a statement denouncing the museum attack and stressed that "this crime will not break our people's will and will not undermine our revolution and our democracy."

Yes, I posted this above in response to you- actually agreeing with you a bit- but you know what? You're being such a ****ing ******* that I don't even care to comment on it anymore at this point. Here's my post from above, if you ****ing even bothered to ****ing read:

"BTW, I do get the anger. These things piss me off to no end. But any act of violence pisses me off- whether done for religious or other reasons. Would the world be better off without religion altogether? Maybe. I went to Catholic school for 8 years and church for twice that long- completely ingrained in me. Some days I just don't know what to think about it."

And you made this thread about YOU with your 2nd post. Not me. YOU.

You sound very frustrated. Kid, it happens - you tried to challenge me, got embarrassed, and now you resort to being vulgar and aggressive. You aren't the first and you won't be the last. Have you found Tunisia on the map yet?

P.S.: I actually usually like your posts, and your CV advice is pretty good. I have seen you engage in embarrassing little internet cat fights (outside the D&D, too) before.

Well, yes, while not directly pertaining to anything that happened in Tunisia, this was sort of on-topic (but hidden in a tirade of holier-than-thou, let me endear myself to the D&D leftists crap).

What you clearly do not get, though, is that this is not "any act of violence". It's not just a random act. It is directly caused by a motivation of political Islam. Even the museum as the act of terror was not randomly chosen. The supremacist ideology of political Islam hates culture - it hates history. It hates everything that is not linked to its own fanatical, supremacist, crazy ideology. We see that in Iraq and Syria where ISIS maniacs destroy cultural heritage, excavations, museums like the savages that they are. But their acts are not random. They are an expression of the same fanatical ideology that comes out in the Tunisian murders, that led to the Paris murders, to the London bombings, to the Atocha bombings, and many other murders around the world.

By trying to ignore that fact and by willfully closing your eyes to the obvious motivation for the murders, you are being intellectually lazy, and you are embarrassing yourself.

No, you do not get it, no matter how many times you copy and paste that, in obvious blind anger.

The sad part is that you direct that anger at me, when it should be directed at those who commit such crimes, and, even more so, at the hate preachers who infected these guys with the hateful ideology that led to these acts.

Reaction of the Clutch BBS D&D inhabitants: Shrug.

Had Israel killed 18 people: Reaction of the same (leftist/Islamist) D&D inhabitants: Scream bloody murder.

So, what's your solution to the 100s of posts you've made about the Islam-driven terrorist acts? You're great about being the messenger, but you lack the ability to propose any viable solution. Thus the contempt you receive from numerous posters.
