Always applaud big bets like this, especially since there's probably little else you could do commercially in Galveston. Just wondering what exactly would prevent it from being blown away again in another 10-15 years, or at least make it profitable enough to justify that risk. Will it just be very well insured?

This sounds goofy; but would it be completely irrational to get some non-seafood restaurants out there?

Same here, "Pleasure Pier" sounded like a huge red light area to me.

I can't believe they're building that first building from the street out of wood. This looks nice though, kind of a Jersey Shore/Coney island type vibe.

I don't have a problem with the project or the name. What I have a problem with is Fertitta being behind it and owning it. This man has taken one cherished icon after another, on the Island, or in the area, like at Kemah, and turned them into one of his tacky franchise eateries, with the obligatory "rides" for the kids. Fertitta seem hell bent on buying everything worth mentioning in Galveston and turning it into homogenized crap. Galveston wasn't enough for him. He had to go and ruin Kemah, the b*stard.

    **** you, Tilman Fertitta.

If a strong hurricane comes through there, you can kiss it goodbye like the historic balinese room did during Ike.

That's awesome. Great to see *someone* try to make a Houston-Galveston a viable tourist destination. Hope it's a success.

I know this has been debated a lot...and yeah the restaurants he owns are pretty average (except I like Landry's although it's expensive for what you get). Yes the entertainment venues he builds are basically tourist traps. But it has revitalized those areas.

Galveston is in need of something to bring in more tourists. What makes me a little skeptical though is the admission fee. Are they gonna charge an entrance fee on top of the tickets for the rides? Surely no right?

wish someone would invest $60 mil to clean up the beach and the water...that would IMO have a huge impact on how people view Galveston...Most Houstonians see Galveston as a joke of a 'water destination'.

    This

I quit going in the water when I was twelve. I have not been in years and don't plan on going anytime soon.
