    Rockets, Hayes hold talks
Morey, agent confident deal will be reached

While the Rockets have made little progress in chasing a new power forward in free agency, they moved Friday toward keeping last season's starter.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey and player agent Calvin Andrews, who represents Rockets forward Chuck Hayes, said after their initial meeting that they were confident that an agreement would be reached for Hayes to return.

"It went extremely well," Andrews said. "We didn't talk about specific numbers yet, but we're very optimistic he will be re-signed as a Rocket. He is at the stage he wants some security. But we are very optimistic things will work out."

The Rockets have the right to match any offers Hayes could receive as a free agent.

Hayes averaged 5.6 points and 6.7 rebounds, starting 43 of the 78 games he played last season.

"As a preliminary meeting, I thought it went well," Morey said. "We'll continue to go back and forth with them. We feel optimistic as well."

Andrews said he would like to see what else the Rockets do at the position to help Hayes have a better idea where he fits with the Rockets. Morey has also spoken with agents representing Darko Milicic, Joe Smith, Malik Allen, P.J. Brown and Mikki Moore but has not been negotiating to sign any of the free agents.

He said he has spent more time working on potential trades than with free agents.

Morey has had talks with David Falk about signing Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo, with Mutombo making it clear he wants to return to the Rockets for one more season.

He said that the contract for first-round pick Aaron Brooks is now with the lawyers, with the relative formality of signing Brooks expected before the Rockets leave for Las Vegas on Monday.

Morey said he does not expect to sign second-round pick Carl Landry until later in the summer after the team determines how it will use its midlevel exception.

Last season, the Rockets used some of their midlevel exception money to sign second-round pick Steve Novak after the summer league.

Did anyone seriously think Hayes would leave us? Still, this is a very reassuring article. Chuckwagon keep on chuggin'!

It certainly would be embarassing and cause a number of problems if he ended up going to someone else. Might put an abrupt end to money ball.

Didnt Feagan recently say that we had no interest in Milicic? Well this is reasuring if not incouraging. If we cant trade for a PF and Darko is not offered the kind of money hes looking for at least we know we are interested. Its obviously along shot but at least we know that Morey is covering all bases.

Who really would want Chuck Hayes, besides the Rockets. He's really low profile and not an ideal fit for starting PF due to his size and lack of offensive game. There was no doubt in my mind that he would return. If he develops a short ranged jumper, he could be a viable option for PF.

Forget short ranged jumpers! HE NEEDS TO DUNK DUNK and DUNK!!! if he does that consistently then he is easily a starting PF in my book!

There is always a market for someone who can get 6.7 rebounds in 20 minutes.

Yep, one of the best per minute rebounders in the NBA, and that playing on a team with close to the lowest possession rate in the league.

All you guys that are not Chuck Hayes believers are gonna have to eat it again next year when he ups his stats even more playing in Adelman's uptempo game that will benefit him because of his mobility and ability to get up and down the court quickly. It would not surprise me one bit if Hayes was able to average 10 reb/game in about 25 minutes per game under Adelman.

Pros and Cons of Hayes on an Adelman coached team

    PROS
    1. He is a very good rebounder and outlet passer. Adelman will love him for his ability to get the board and get the ball out quickly. He will be very instrumental in starting our new fast break.

    2. He's a great passer in the half court, really sees the floor well.

    3. He is very fast, he will make a great option running the break and will beat his man down the floor possession after possession.

    4. He is still our best post up defender and one of the strongest players on our team, and will be at WORST the 2nd best post up defender depending on who we trade for. He very well may still be the best post up defender after trades/signings.

    5. He has very quick hands for steals and slapping ball away from his opponent.

    6. He's a great garbage man, doesn't need the ball to be productive.

    7. He works his tail off and dives on the floor for any loose balls.

    8. Great attitude.

    9. Great offensive rebounder, which will be magnified with more possessions and uptempo fast breaks.

    10. His bball iq is off the charts. He will pick up what Adelman is doing with the offense in a hurry and make it work very well.

    11. He has a very good handle. Do not be surprised if Adelman exploits his size by letting him dribble the ball up after he boards when some behemoth is chasing him around, to help us further speed up the play. He has one of the best handles for any PF (some of that is due to the fact he is short, which is a plus when you are handling the basketball)

    12. Did I mention he's one of the best rebounders in the NBA.

    CONS:
    1. HE's SHORT!

    Deal with it baby.

This could be be worrying. Morey didn't have anything to say about the latest Spanoulis outburst but now he's taking the time to talk up Hayes. Rockets will not win a championship with Hayes as a starter. You can quote me on that.

Hey Utah couldn't win one with Karl Malone as a starter either.

and We couldn't win one with Barkley as our starting PF playing next to the greatest player that ever suited up for the Rox.

    You can quote that too.

I could care less about Utah and never liked Barkley much as a player.

Morey has said all along that he wants to resign Hayes. He has also said in an ideal world Hayes would be backing up the PF spot behind a talented veteran we hope to bring in, probably via trade. Hayes cant back anyone up if he isnt on the team. How does Morey saying he is confident we can resign Hayes have anything to do with Vspan, or give any reason to worry.

Yeah, it's obvious you don't like Hayes either. :(

Do you like any good power forwards?

Sometimes it feels that if a PF is named Chuck, Chucky, or Charles, they will somehow end up playing for the Rockets.

It seems the only issue here is the contract length.
