How on Earth can Temple University justify having kept him on their Board of Trustees for years after this case? 2005-2014... 9 years after this deposition and only then because all the stink rose last year.

All universities have embarrassing compromises, but this is pretty gross. Must have been tough to have the alumni identify so heavily with one person as the face of the fundraising franchise. Ugh.

Those are fair points, and it's good to be careful.

Both twitter guy and the AP seem to say he traded sedatives for sex.

The main problem with the AP article is the use of the verb "drugging" which is very active and would suggest to a reader that there were victims. I definitely assumed it was not consensual at first.

But he was apparently, in this case at least, drugging people in the way a pharmacist might drug someone.

I grew up in the 90's so I barely known/seen anything about Bill Cosby and his show.

How was he perceived before all this rape stuff?

From what I seen of the Cosby Show it looked boring as heck compared to Fresh Prince/Family Matters.

Let's be real. You were probably born post 1995. Not exactly "growing up" in the 90's or else you'd know very well about the Cosby show.

That is a fair statement, but the novelty of the premise and cast for that era and generation of white adults, and the realism added by semi-improvised dialogue allowed it to make a meaningful impact. It's popularity helped bring back and validate nuclear families as a viable comedic premise and probably kept networks from completely abandoning black sitcoms after Good Times and the Jeffersons fizzled. One could argue that Cheers was as good a show and that Family Ties was as innovative a family sitcom.

Back to your point, though, Cosby and the producers (Carsey and Werner) removed probably the most interesting cast member, Lisa Bonet, and the opportunity for more compelling teen and young adult story arcs to maintain the still groundbreaking imagery of a prosperous, fully functional black family. Then they tried to compensate for that mistake by adding Raven-Symone and Erika Alexander.

Cosby ended in 1992, right when black media culture was getting younger, much more urban and integrated with music and sports, for the sake of both purported authenticity and the surprising commercial appeal to younger whites and blacks of all ages. It also signifies the point at which cable subscriptions fully penetrated the public, so people were indulging in several more viewing options than to necessarily commit to something like Cosby. Imagine how long shows like Mr. Belvedere or Newhart would have lasted on broadcast TV today.

Think Family Matters except where both parents don't pull down six figure salaries.

No, Family Matters was a terrible show.

The documents were sealed so Temple might not have known.

I thought about this a bit. Once a staff member brings something against a board member, the university's legal counsel will know a lot about the case, in almost all cases. It's possible Temple didn't know about this exact piece of testimony but they had to know about the complaint and the behavior, and most probably the details of the settlement.
