So the Knicks Are Going to get a Lottery Pick Either Way this Year?

If I'm interpreting this right it looks like the Knicks could end up with a very good draft 2011 draft pick anyway.

It's disappointing that the Rockets have not played up to the hype this season, because it would of been great to get a top 10 pick from the Knicks while sending them ours which should of been in the 20+ range.

But unfortunately as it seems now and the pace we are on they are still going to get a lottery pick.

It's going to suck if we continue at our current pace and send them a top 10 pick for one of their just marginally better picks.

Why cant we be a playoff team this season while still snatching a good pick from them

Oh well.....tis the life of a Rockets fan.

How? It's OUR right to swap.

I we "protect" the pick and choose not to swap, then there is nothing left.

It's our decision whether or not to switch.

On the bright side, we could have two chances to get a high pick (as long as its not the #1).

Yeah, I wouldn't be so glum. We roughly double our chance to pick #2 or #3. And, in the upper reaches of the draft order, being able to move up even just 1 or 2 spots is incredibly valuable. Imagine if we could have done that in the Brandon Roy draft.

Besides all that, I think it gives us more freedom in the season. There's less temptation to tank for the draft order, so we can put on a happy face and try to win and impress free-agents-to-be. Doubly so if we do pull off a trade-deadline-deal for the superstar but are too far out of the race to get to the playoffs -- we can still shoot for the best lotto record and not pay the draft price for it.

Plus, the obligatory: we're only 11 games in. A lot can change between now and the end of the season. Don't give up yet.

Think of it this way dude. If both of the teams continue to suck, we will have double the chances of landing a 2nd or 3rd pick. Now if the Knicks land the 1st pick then we're screwed, but just think of it that way.

Heres a better way to think of it:

With two lottery picks, we have two chances to get into the top 3 and we dont HAVE to switch. So even if we finish eighth and the Knicks fifth, we still have a great shot at getting an even better pick.

It will suck that the Knicks will improve and the 2012 pick wont be as good, but it is still a win win for us.

What if we trade our pick for a ****tier pick. Can we then swap picks with the Knicks?

Will the Knicks send a representative to look at the balls?

Kinda weird if they end up with the #2 pick. The best outcome for the Knicks (other than getting the protected #1) would be the Rockets getting a lottery pick one place above them. That way, we wouldn't swap.

    ^No

We dont have the right to swap picks with the Knicks.

The pick, we have in our possession, comes attached with a provision that it can be swapped for the Knicks pick. The provision follows the pick in any trade.

Excuse me, but how will the knicks will improve? Walsh have shown during his time with the knicks that he doesn't know how to draft. And its not a given that Melo will join them.

While its possible to screw up a lottery pick, its more likely than not that it will provide the Knicks with atleast something positive going forward.

One thing nobody is talking about is the fact that Denver wanted a pick from NY for Anthony. Everyone assumed we would be good so our pick would be worthless. Now our pick via NY is looking alot better.

Well the Knicks certainly aren't going to get worse. Plus Carmelo is a free agent this summer and he will most likely find his way to NYC.

Still, the Knicks can't trade [whatever 2011 pick they end up with], since they still owe their 2012 pick to the Rockets.

The more chances of us getting the highest possible pick the better. There is no downside. Except a bad season of course.
