Taiwan is the rare exception to the rule that possession is 9/10ths of the law. The CCP has never had control of the island and yet they claim it.

Technically, both the KMT government in Taiwan and the CCP government are still at war because there was never a peace treaty after 1949. After retreating to Taiwan, the KMT claimed that they were still the legitimate government of all of China and the UN went along with it until the 1970's, when they finally recognized that in reality the CCP controlled all of mainland China and was indeed the rightful government of the Chinese mainland. T

he CCP cannot allow Taiwan to be considered independent because they want to reserve the right to conquer the island with military force and have that be ruled a continuation of the civil war, rather than an act of foreign aggression. By any practical measure, Taiwan has been a separate "country" from the People's Republic of China for over 65 years, with its own government, a different passport, and a different currency.

The modern reality is that China is too strong for anyone in the world to want to resist their wishes. The CCP is just biding their time hoping that the Taiwanese people will come around and allow the PRC to annex them, but as time goes on, the folks in Taiwan are actually drifting further away. The Taiwanese reformed their government in the 90's and now have a true democracy. Most people there are not under any illusions about what life under PRC rule would be like. At some point though, the PRC will stop waiting and force the issue, I just hope it doesn't start a nuclear war.

People said that things were too different in Hong Kong for it to be part of the PRC yet Hong Kong has been back in the PRC fold. Even with recent protests the majority of people in Hong Kong are fine with continuing to be part of the PRC. While things are very different in Taiwan and the PRC I don't think they are irreconcilable. 20 years ago it would've been unthought of to have direct flights or to have KMT representatives having cordial visits to Beijing yet those things have happened.
